Possible improvement to A pillar oil tanker loss

Reading through BIKE magazine today I can across this...

Not sure how new the product is - but it has a top review. BIKE has a real thing about large A pillars and the danger to bikers, or in our case the dangers to oil tankers.

I've ordered one of these and will update once it arrives and I've given it a test!

Agreed. Would be good to hear how you get on with this. Before we got the A2, I did 99% of my travel on a pushbike. Whilst keeping me fit, it did very little to prepare me for the skills required to navigate a roundabout with a blindfold on.

I have bought a pair of these since seeing this post and am awaiting delivery. The a-pillar is very similar to that of the Mitsubishi Colt. I had one for a year and thinking I was used to negotiating junctions by this time. I ploughed into the side of a Ford Fiesta at a crossroads! So the point I'm making is even if you think you are used to it, it only takes a momentary lack of concentration or a bit of blinding sunlight in your eyes...better safe than sorry I say!

Thought I'd add my comments having had the above product fitted for a week or so.

Positives
:
It's very easy to fit. You simply moisten the smooth side of the strip and flatten it onto the screen making sure you smooth out the air bubbles. It sticks very effectively.

Negatives
:
The windscreen really needs to be clean inside and out for it to be effective. Also it doesn't work well if you look directly at it to check for obstructions. As the instructions state, it is better to drive normally and allow your peripheral vision to pick up things. The strip is small, perhaps a little bit too small for the tall A2 screen

Does it work?:
Yes it does, but it is not as effective as I expected. I get the feeling that if the A2 windscreen was a little more obtuse in relation to it's angle with the dashboard, the strip may be more effective. However it is possible to see objects that would otherwise be obstructed by the thick A2 corner driver's side pillar when stationary (e.g. when at a junction). Less so when in motion. I bought two strips - one for the passenger side, because I find this side to be the most obstructive. I've not noticed the benefits of this side as much as the driver's side one and I'm curious if it is actually doing any good but I'm still evaluating it.

Worth the money?
Maybe a little over-priced for my liking at £47 for two, but it is delivered promptly. I think the product could be extended to make it fit a larger proportion of the screen.

In summary
It doesn't negate the need to be extremely vigilant at junctions. I wouldn't rely on the serraview APS but I feel that if it 'noticed' something that I did not, it might alert my reactions and help prevent an accident. So I will be keeping them on for the foreseeable future! Will be interesting to hear what the other guy says about them!

Hi Gexx,

Handy things Fresnel lenses. Your example does not appear to focus the sun's rays to a point, so there is little chance of setting fire to the interior of your car on a sunny day and should be quite safe, unlike this one.

If you must try this at home  WEAR WELDING GOGGLES and don't put your hand anywhere near the point of focus.
