Possible knacked gearbox

Help I was driving to work when I lost all drive from engine to road wheels.I was in 4th goin into 5th. Gear changed no problem, all as normal went to increase speed no drive :( gear selection is as you would expect.Just no drive not even reverse:confused:I am hoping its just a destroyed clutch. There was no hint of noise from the box before although its noisy ish now and drove no problems the day before.Gear change every thing as normal.Anyone have any clues.Or does anyone know of a gearbox recon place.Cheers Davy
ps the car has only done 60,000 plus miles

Hi Davy
I'd guess its most likely to be a clutch problem so keep the idea of a recon gearbox on the back burner for now.

Cheers Spike

Ours did this when it was 2 years old and 28K miles.

It went back to Audi as it was under warranty and they (claimed) replaced the Gearbox, Clutch and Clutch housing.

Audi had our A2 for 3 weeks - waiting for a new part but when pushed on the subject said the part was the gearbox.

I could tell it was clean and looked new but could have just been cleaned.

If you do find out what it was please tell me as I have been wondering for years

Hi Spike my thinking is the clutch / pressure plate also.I am hoping the clutch has disintegrated, bit bizzare I know but its the lesser of 2 evils:).I need to source a gearbox with 24 hr delivery option because the guy thats doing the job for me only has one ramp and when we split it and if it proves to be the box its gonny tie up his ramp till we stitch it back together

Hi Bret its a 02 plate 1.4 tdi se 75 with 60,000 odd on the clock and gave no warning whatsoever of its intention.

Hi Shezlee I will let you know what the out come is :D

On another note I spoke to the gearbox guy today from North Yorkshire and he reckons that the A2 box is the same as the Seat Leon,Golf td se and the Fiat.Don't know if thats right though. Total price to replace so far is £550 + £45 delivery + vat = £691 + fittin + new clutch which is good practice to fit at this stage.Looks like I am looking at the best part of £1000 if it is the box

Apologies for the slight thread hijack, I would ask is there any merit in doing other work to the gearbox whilst it is out of the car and being worked on?

I only bring it up as if you are that way inclined, it makes sense to get it done whilst it is out. If it was me and I had a somewhat "hotter" car I would be thinking about these types of things.

an oil change is highly recommended. I'll get mine done next time it's in the garage. Along with a linkage lubrication and adjustment.

I was thinking if it was the box and I was to replace it is there an upgrade ratio wise that would fit

Hi there just got word back from garage my possible gearbox prob was a knacked clutch. The centre part has broken up completely pheew .Thought I would let you all know.
Cheers Davidmac
