Possible purchase?

Hi, I am new to this forum and have just sold my 3.2 A3 as I need a more economical car. I have decided on the A2 Sport as it looks a great car and shorlisted the 1.4 TDI 90 and the 1.6 FSI models.

I like grey and the black metallics and also like the darker interiors (not sure what interiors they came with? Are they black or grey?

I have seen a car being sold by a garage (non-dealer).

The car is a 2003/03 1.6 FSI in grey and has had 2 owners (demo + 1).
It has 57k on the clock and has no sunroof but does have a/c. It has a full main dealer Service History and has had 3 services with the last service being done at 54k in Jan 2008. I presume the cambelt should have been done already at 40k? It is priced at £7k.

The car is being sold with a new MOT, 6 months warranty and a service but I have been told if I do not want the service to keep an Audi service history the price can be adjusted.

I will be looking at the car tomorrow and if its in good condition making an offer, does this sound like a good car to buy and is the price reasonable?

Cheers for any advice :)

Sounds about right price wise. The cam belt is needed at 60k. The handbook says 60k but doesn't give a timeline. Most dealers will tell you it should be done at 60k or 5 years whichever comes first.

I would be surprised if the belt was done on this car. If not, it gives you some bargaining power.

The 1.6 is a good engine. The coil packs are a weak point. If one of them is causing problems, the car will missfire. It's something you would definitely notice when driving it.

Otherwise just check for the usual things you would look for when buying a car. A HPI check would also be worth considering.

Thanks for the reply.

Do you know how much it would cost to replace the cambelt?

Would this work be best done by a main dealer or Audi specialist or could I ask them to do it pre-purchase?

Im looking for an A2 myself at the mo and have been quoted around 300 quid for a cam belt change at an independant garage, Mike(Skipton) our resident A2 guru also sent me a link to an Audi dealer who was advertising timing belt change on eBay for the same money, although I checked this morning and the ad isnt there any more.
The water pump will be extra of course. If the car is at a retail garage, I would use this as a bargaining tool or insist it is replaced on an 03 car.

I think that your engine choice should be dictate by really what the car will be doing, my 1.6 does the school run most days, so short trip cold start followed by another short trip and it averages about 36mpg, on my trip to Gatwick a couple of weeks ago, gentle driving saw 46.3mpg for the trip which you cant grumble about, on average I get 330 - 350 miles per tank and now costing £40 (As opposed to sub £30 when I got it) to fill up :(.

Mine will be for sale again shortly as I have a new car arriving at long last.

i recently paid £270 for a full cambelt kit fitted to my 1.4 at a local independant garage, that's probably as cheap as it gets.

Thanks for the replies.

I viewed the A2 today and I have paid a deposit on the car. They have also agreed to change the cambelt pre-purchase. I presume the changing of the cambelt is all that is required or would other work also be required? Water pump?

A few days ago I got a quote from an independent Audi dealer:

M.O.T = £50.35
FULL LONGLIFE SERVICE = £231.25
CAMBELT KIT, WATER PUMP & RIBBED BELT CHANGE = £359.98
BRAKEFLUID CHANGE = £35.84
TOTAL PRICE = £677.43.
ALL PRICES INCLUDE V.A.T.

I asked on the Cambelt to include BELT TENSIONING bits

I'm awaiting a quote from a VW dealer.

(sorry about the Capitals - I'm cutting and pasting from the quote)

Thanks again for the replies.

They are kindly doing the cambelt included in the price of the sale. Will the water pump add a lot to the cost for them to change also?

The water pump will add zero to labour and only a few pounds to the parts cost, along with the extra necessary coolant.

Cheers,

Mike
