Potential purchase

Hi all,

I'm planning on buying an A2 from Wom Automotive, whom I believe has a very good rep in the A2 world . I'm new to A2's which seem quirky to me . I currently have a remapped and slightly modded m235i . Main reason for purchase is my work commute is now 80 miles a day ( previously only about 15miles) and I'm spending nearly £100/ week on fuel alone on the 235, so fuel economy is essential to me. Would appreciate comments and feedback on the car I'm looking, I understand this is a very good example. My questions are:
1. Do A2's come with Aircon
2. How difficult/expensive is it to fix sunroof?
3. This car is slightly above my budget , any comments about price , have they gone up in the last few years?

Many thanks for advice and guidance

1. Some do. It was included as part of the SE spec. The WOM example you are interested in doesn't have it.

2. One of the members here - @Kleynie - services and repairs them. See this thread for details:

3. The prices being asked for A2s in good condition is going up as time passes.

If anyone here is also considering selling their car, please let me know. Thanks

Answers.

1. Some do, some don't, the majority do, this example does not.

2. Most members do not try to fix a faulty sunroof so I suppose that means specialist knowledge and rated above average difficulty, it normally has to come out and it's big and viewed as a two man person (got to be correct these days!) job. Luckily we have a member who offers a repair service but of course it will depend on what's wrong.

3. The price on this one seems very good to me, it's the low mileage/service history and good condition/desirable & rare colour plus the reassurance that WOM have looked after it previously and will have been over it for sale. Generally speaking good service history/condition/low mileage cars are in this price bracket and have increased in recent years and the same goes for any average A2, creeping up steadily. If you fancy a project easy to source an A2 with problems for sub £500.

Thanks Andy, very helpful.

For a daily commuter as in your case, I wouldn't go for a low mileage car (you will be racking up miles anyway and it will depreciate if you decide to sell) so you can easily find something around the £2k mark or less) and spend the rest on diesel. Good luck in your search

I would have no hesitation at all in buying from WOM - I have bought and sold back to them several vehicles over the last 6 -7 years. You will struggle to find better customer service. I have seen this car on their website and it will be as described.

Another question please. What aftermarket lowering springs is recommended and how much lowering would improve the stance ? Im looking for something that wouldn't affect the ride too much but gets rid of that wheel arch gap .

I'd suggest that there are more important things to think about, ahead of buying your first A2. The spec you are after, for starters. Do you want the OSS panoramic roof or not? Do you want climate control (aircon) or not? Do you want 2 or 3 back seats? These are important considerations because they can't be retrofitted, where most other options can. Plus of course your engine choice.

If you buy a 'sport' A2 you'll get a slightly lower suspension by default.

Shorter springs need to be stiffer, and make the ride less forgiving. There's no way round that. It's simpler to fit larger diameter tyres, which would improve the ride.

Suspension modification is best done after practical experience of the standard set-up.

Assuming you manage to cut your fuel bill by 50% (due to MPG and fuel costs) ie £50 per week instead of £100 the price costs to get that A2 inc Tax and Insurance (£4995 + £30 + Assume £200) = £5225. You have the car for 1 year and do 20,000.

Purchase Inc Tax and Insurance = £5225
Lowering Mod and Maintenance (10K Service) = £500
Selling after 1 year £ 3995(Assume)
Total costs for 1 years motoring = £5725 - £3995 = £1730

The cost for 1 years motoring is £1730 / £50 (extra fuel costs) = a further 34 weeks using your 235i in fuel

The plus side is that your not going to be putting on 20,000 miles on your 235i

Just food for thought.

PS i had dealings with WOM and would buy and recommend them in a heartbeat. - Great family company and wonderful service

Excellent man maths @k7aus . I had same thoughts exactly. However as you say , the depreciation in the m235i adding another 20k miles would cost me at least another 1k. It's a 2014 six cylinder model so it's holding value quite well. I've also put a deposit on a new civic type R, so BMW will have to go by the end of year. Putting 20k/ year of boring miles on a new performance car is not ideal. (although news about availability and pricing may yet scupper this plan) . I need a runaround , albeit a very nice one in the case of Wom's example. I don't mind spending a bit more for a nice example .

Have you driven an A2?? They are addictive little beast. Im sure once you have one you will be bitten, many have already. I bought TDI90 and my mum now will not give it back so i had to buy a TDI75 from Clackers to satisfy my desire to mod it(inspired by A2Steve's Dune)[15" A4 Lightweight Alloys with 5x112 to 5x100 spacers, Fabia Springs, A2 Roof Bars and 90's Roof Basket]

Interested in the route you took for springs/ spacers . No haven't driven an A2 but I'm sure I'll like it.

My A2 paid for itself in exactly 3 years through halving the monthly fuel bill compared to my C5 A6 2.7TTq estate in everyday use. A lovely car that made a lovely noise, but not ideal for commuting! All of our A2s (when suspension renovated) are a much nicer steer on local roads, and with the PTW gearbox swap, my BHC 1.4tdi became the go-to vehicle for country-length motorway journeys as well.

I bought mine without any prior experience behind the wheel - you will indeed like it as they’re very easy to get a comfortable driving position.

If you’re doing that many miles I’d want a car with aircon and sports seats with lumbar adjustment - many non sport cars (mine included) have had these retrofitted.

Mind you, look for a great car and then add to the spec as you want from there. Only choices you really need to make up-front then are whether you want a sunroof, air con and 4 or 5 seats, as these things cannot easily be changed or retrofitted. Everything else spec-wise can be.
