Power Loss 1.6 FSI

Ive had my A2 1.6 FSI now for about 6-7 weeks and driven it a grand total of twice. Once to the Audi specialist and once home.

Its suffering from a loss of power. It drives ok but as soon as you put the foot down it totally dies.

So far ive changed the inlet manifold but the mechanic has basically given up as he gave me a price and is now eating into his time which i totally understand. He has spend ages looking at different things but cant find a solution.

Any input would be greatly appreciated?

thank you

You need, as a starting point, a full VCDS scan. You can post the results here. Maybe someone within reach of Glasgow can help you with this.

Are you aware that the FSI needs 98 RON petrol as an absolute minimum? If the car has had 95 RON put in (or some supermarket 98 RONs for that matter) it certainly won't be helping.

Hi Pal, as Steve_c says, Run a VCDS scan on it and see what error codes come up. Some ideas are check air filter is clean, fuel filter is good, then onto fuel pressure regulator, then the electric fuel pump in the tank to check and change if necessary and finally the high pressure fuel pump (the most expensive bit). Do it in this order as it is the cheapest way round.

Hi

The codes that came up with my scanner were :

17850
17428
17439

I’m going to drop in see the mechanic tomorrow and i’ll find out what his computer flagged up.

Genuinely been an absolute nightmare.

17850 relates to the EGR valve
17428 relates to fuel pressure regulation
17439 relates the inlet manifold tuning valve

but you do need a current VCDS scan for the best possible info.

When i spoke to the mechanic today he said fuel pressure regulation and N80 were the two that were flagging up on VCDS.
He is a Audi specialist but is proper struggling with it.

It's almost certainly switching to 'limp' mode. Limp mode always flags up the cause on VCDS, and sometimes components can be reconfigured to work correctly using VCDS.

It might be worth trying a separate thread, "Anybody able to help with VCDS near Glasgow" just to see if anyone comes forward.

The absolute specialists in sorting the FSI are WOM Automotive in Stoke:

and it may be worth considering whether you can get your A2 to them.

It's not easy for me to give you more specific advice since my own A2 is a 1.4, but hopefully other FSI owners will join in here.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply. I called WOM Automotive yesterday and they were unable to help obviously because they needed to see it.
The guy i have working on it is a top mechanic which uses VCDS and he has struggled.

I just have a feeling it’s something silly.

I appreciate your frustration. You've bought a really well specified low mileage FSI and you want to be using it! So let's start at the beginning. Did the car have these issues when you bought it? I'm assuming you took it for a test drive.

Ask your mechanic to save the VCDS scan, as a text file, you can do this from the scan result screen. Then put that text on here.
It would be worth clearing the errors first, then do a 30 minute drive, then do a fresh scan for us to see. The power of the A2OC forum is behind you.
Mac.

Thanks Mac.

I’m just heading in to see him just now.
He did clear the codes and drive it but they popped up again.
I’m honestly gutted cause its a nice wee car.

If any group can help you Gary, then it is this one, its nice to see so many members willing to help out if at all possible, I reiterate my offer of sending parts up to see if they clear the faults for you, from N80, to the potentiometer on the end of the flaps.
Cheers Andy....

Hi Garyb17, the misfires are usually down to either Injectors or coils and plugs. Ask your Mechanic to show you the misfire count on the injectors he should be able to that. Your pic doesn't show that, my mechanic showed me so i know it's possible.

Can you tell from the service records of the car whats been done to it since new? It could be that it just wants a full service to include the important plugs. Buy some Denso Iridiums/platinums (Cant remember which now) but definitely Denso they're great! Thats what i would do and go from there. Once you know you have an up to date serviced car you'll be going forward with a decent base going forward.

Hi,

he told me to ignore the misfires as they are down to the way the car is running.

He said the only faults that matter are the top 2.

Thanks for your reply.

I just drove the car again. It honestly drives great if you very slowly accelerate. If you quickly put the foot down it totally dies.

I'm wondering whether you could realistically drive this A2 to Stoke?
I'm also still wondering what state it was in when you bought it, and whether you filled it up with 95 RON petrol?
