Power Steering died

Hi all

The power steering has been cutting out intermittently for a few weeks, and just the other day it's gone completely, making the car very heavy to steer. I just had a look at the reservoir and there is a healthy amount of fluid in there, although I'm not sure how full it should be. It's just touching the little ball in the inside of the cap. Is there anything else I can look at or is it likely to be a pump failure? Just over 207k miles now so quite possible. Cheers

Check 80 amp fuse in foot well.

Also check the connection between the fuse, the power steering module (J500), and from the power steering module to the power steering pump
itself, as these all carry the high current supply.

And if the above doesn't sort it then I have a couple of working PAS pumps on the shelf and can get them dispatched on a 24hr delivery.

Also forgot to mention that when it went, I was on full lock reversing out if a parking spot and it was making a groaning noise 🙃

No, there arent any leaks at all. Checked the fuse and connection in the foot well and they're fine. I've not checked the connection to the pump just yet as its looking a bit fiddly and I suspect I'm going to have to get the wheel off and remove the arch liner to properly have a look.

If you have a multi meter, check for 12 volts at the pump.

When you check the supply and ground (if OK) - scan instruments (17) for fault codes - it may be helpful.

To get access to the pump - remove the left wheel, wheel arch lining, then remove 3 bolts securing pump bracket and move the pump into the wheel arch for good access.

You don’t have to remove the bumper.

Thanks for the replies. I'm off on a trip come Friday so I'll take a look when I get back. Luckily it's my 2nd car so no urgent need for repair. I don't have a multimeter, unfortunately.

A multimeter is a very useful tool to have, and not expensive. Choose one that measures current, (amps), as well as voltage and resistance. Around £25 - 30 ish.
