Hi All,

Changing from other cars to my A2, I notice how difficult this car is to steer. It makes me wonder whether this is normal or whether something is broken/disconnected. How would I discover whether I've got power steering? and then how to check whether its working?

This is not the 3L model, it weighs 945 kg, what with the heavyweight rear seats and A/C.

Hi Gaff
Not sure about the 1.2L models but all normal A2's have power steering which uses an electric pump to operate a hydraulically assisted steering rack. The system is nicely weighted for good feel and not over assisted (too light) like some larger cars. Just try turning the steering wheel with and without the engine running (make sure the steering lock is off first) The difference should be very obvious. If its not working, check the fuse. If it is working but not very well, check the fluid level in the power steering reservoir. Its hidden under the passenger side headlight but the level is just visible with the bonnet open.

Cheers Spike

Hi Gaff,

I think that you'll find that the 1.2 3L did not have a power steering option whereas the 3L+ (86g CO2/km) did and you'll be hard pressed to find one without - there may even have been no option not to have it. My 3L+ will be on the road in the next few weeks.

Hi Gaff,

When the A2 first went on sale in 1999, there was no power steering option for the 1.2Tdi. According to an Intercar Price List of 2003, power steering and air conditioning could be ordered as separate options. Adding power steering only would probably have made it a 3L but climate control would have made it a 3L+. These options were introduced in 2001, or possibly earlier, as my 3L+ has both.

I've also got a 1,2 tdi with el clima and powersteering etc.

I'd like to ask other owners of the 1,2 tdi 840kg car. Have you had any kind of problems? have you replaced any broken parts? I'd like to hear about it.

regards

I have the 1.2tdi with power steering, climate and all that stuff (german import), Haven't had any problems yet and none of the maintanance history points to any problems.

The car steers really easy, the easiest way to tell is if there is a power steering filler when you take the audi grill down. And it should be pretty obvious when you try to turn the steering wheel with car running at a standstill, my wheel turns very easy.

I'm not sure about the 945kg number you have, the power steering and climate shouldn't add all to much ;)

no power steering on mine!

Just been under the car. No power steering on this one (no reservoir, no hydraulic lines to the steering box). Explains the heavier than expected (but tolerable) feeling at roundabouts.

I think the Southern European countries may have got a "budget" version of this car in comparison with the German model. The target buyer could have been companies rather than the public: so no power steering; no height adjustment for seats; no fogs etc.

Just got mine registered in France :). Enjoying driving it, love the eco coasting feature, and have a fuel consumption of 3.7 l/100 km for my commute of 100 km per day. This car is so much quieter than the other diesels I've had. Could do with a bigger fuel tank though, 20 litres is not nearly enough!

Gaff,

I think all the above features were optional for the 1.2Tdi. There was a 34L tank option at no extra cost. Not sure why anyone would choose the 20L option!

D3 will still get 3l/100km even with air con and pwr steering but CO2 up from 81 to 86 g/km
