For those unaware: when you click on someones icon (avatar) and then click on their user name (or click again on their icon) you go to their profile page. If you then write a message to them in the "write something" box, then that message is public.
To send a private message (PM), click once on their icon (avatar) and select "Start conversation"; or if on their profile page click on "Start conversation" above the word "About".
I accidently stumbled across New Profile Posts which lists all the "write something" messages and got the feeling people may have written these thinking their message was private.
