Project Annie - Making an A2 Sicily Proof

It’s an odd one - gear selector cables are either totally fine or they’re not - I don’t understand how they wear or break, but it seems to me that unless disturbed in some way they shouldn’t at all?

Have no fear with secondhand parts - see the first statement above.

Seriously thinking about selling the car now, as the replacement part will be as old as the original... Not sure how long it will last.

Thankfully it happened right at my front door. Imagine if you're on a road trip and from one moment to the other you lose your gears.
Proxy parts in Holland may be an option if you are in Belgium?

Just my quick two cents on the Michelin Cross Climates that I have had on my car for about two years now. We had a bit of snow last week here in Belgium.

They cope very well in the snow, only once did the ABS light come on when I was driving off a parking lot in 1st gear (I know, I know, I should have driven off in 2nd gear to avoid the wheels spinning). For those of us who don't have a separate wheel set for winter tyres / can't be bothered switching tyres twice a year, they are more than capable when it comes to our Western European winter weather! :)

Agreed - we live at the bottom of a very steep hill that ices up during cold snaps - to the point where a 4x4 on summers can really struggle to ascend or controllably descend. Not a problem for both our cars which are both shod with the CC2 however.

Downside is - they seem to be more puncture prone than other tyres, unless it’s just the environment we live in - see my recent “today I” posts!

To get the grip they will be a softer compound which is naturally more prone to punctures. Also there is lots of tread pattern which again is more prone to picking up a small object and thus causing a puncture
Consider a slick racing tyre and a cross climate it’s fairly obvious which will hover up small articles

I had a fun experience with the Flemish Tax Agency. I was sent a bill for the registration and the road tax of my A2. The amount was slightly more than what I had expected, but I was quite surprised at how the tax was calculated. They used a formula that includes the CO2 emissions and the Euro Emission Class. They used 151g/km and Euro3 which were incorrect. Especially the latter was a problem as it would mean that I could only drive the car for another year as Wallonia is introducing a low emissions zone in the whole of the region with the minimum requirement being Euro4.

I filed a complaint (as per the instruction on the original letter), but did not get a reply. The day on which I had to pay to total amount due, I noticed that the original bill had been replaced by a lower one. My complaint had been accepted (I had included the COC from Audi to show the correct CO2 emissions and a letter from Audi confirming that my car did indeed meet the Euro 4 Standard. Quite to my surprise, however, they now mention the emissions standard as "Euro" without a number and have determined that my car has a DPF...

To be followed :)
