Hello all,

I’ve been promising to give you an update on the recent works on the new commuter but haven’t had that much time to sit down to type it up so will do it over the next few days now things have quietened down a little.

First up was a niggle that has plagued me since getting this beautiful A2 is that the windscreen washer bottle was quickly emptied. I worked out that it was leaking from one the seam welds and not the rubber grommet for the washer pump (non DIS bottle so only 1 to check).

Therefore it had to be removed:

I’m so close (maybe this after/evening or Saturday) to adding DIS that I really wanted a DIS enabled washer bottle. That said I’m quite sure you could drill the hole out if you have the sender with correct grommet.

Additionally in my quest to have as much of the dealers optional extras ticked of I thought why not add a headlamp washer bumper. A rather difficult item to locate unfortunately…

But a local member came to my rescue; anyone remember this item I have for sale a couple of years ago:

Very lucky for me this item was yet to be fitted to the same colour coded A2 so I was able to get it back into my custody. It was painted some weeks ago now, the same time as the door mirror covers.

Before fitting the original bumper obviously had to be removed. Whilst there I thought I’d also remove this puny item:

Then subsequently fitted a pair twin tone horns from an A6 C6, same connector which made the retrofit quite simple and rather quick:

Yes they’re a little corroded but function perfectly and also audibly eloquently noticeable. In all honesty having the beefier horn setup isn’t totally necessary but as it’s such an easy thing to do I thought why not just do it whilst the bumper is off. The horns only cost £10 from the breakers yard near work.

In the bottom right of the above picture you should be able to make out a shiny clean washer bottle. I can confirm it’s the big-fella:

No more leaks and everything function as it should. Very happy with a couple of hours work when the sun presented its face last weekend.

I need to give the car some exterior pampering after commuting the last 2 weeks without getting the bucket and sponge out, a job for when the weather improves, maybe this afternoon but will add a picture of the bumper below anyway. More pictures to follow once it’s been polished:

The paint job looks brilliant but wasn’t colour matched to the 22 years of fading. Knowing the plastic items fade quicker maybe the car will be one-tone in the next 5 years. I’m sure some cutting compound will rejuvenate the existing coachwork though. A job for the less wet months I think but It’s certainly nice enough to commuting though.

Run out of room for further picture so will add more over the weekend once it’s had some TLC along with the next instalment of upgrades.

Kind regards,

Tom

Nice work Tom - although I have to say the twin horn conversion is a vital safety upgrade in my opinion, the standard single tone horn is just too weedy to be depending on when a split second jolt to another driver’s senses is all that separates a near-miss becoming a prang! You want to jolly well look after this one now after all 😉

Hello David,

Hope all is well down the road Sir. Yes I completely agree. Personally I prefer the twin tone setup over the factory effort.

I recall having to use the horn in Project OEM in the first few months of ownership where a vehicle in front was rolling back towards me, I used the horn and it didn’t get any reaction but fortunately the driver in front of me realised in the last few inches and applied his brakes.

This was the driving force behind fitting the same in that car and of course this one. I’m confident the enhanced sound will get the attention of anyone that it’s supposed to.

Kind regards,

Tom

Yes the twin horn conversion is still not aggressively loud, but the two together have sufficient presence to be normal for today’s traffic conditions I’d say.

Hello all,

Last weekend I finally had the honour of meeting David @devans when I dropped down to Dartford to collect a Soul Double DIN Dashboard and a SideGuard kit to add to this terrific commuter. David it was a complete pleasure to meet you and I thank you for your generosity, hospitality and advice; really appreciated.

The journey home took almost double the time than the outbound journey, but that didn’t stop me getting the basic tools to hand to commence the transplant. I arrived home by 16:30 then fueled myself ready to start the contortionist activity at 17:00.

Exactly 2 hours later this was removed:

6165AC56-85C7-46AD-89FA-27636EDD40EB.jpeg

And the cabin looked like this:

7E5B22B0-0BA4-4B5A-844A-6FCDB092177B.jpeg

I found a few wiring issues along the way that needed minor remedial works but an hour later at 20:00 the Soul Double DIN Dashboard was offered up:

05029F93-9258-4CBC-96C8-1CE1656FC2E8.jpeg

The interior remained this way until the following morning when I re-armed myself with tools required to correctly fix the dashboard and put everything back the way it should be.

Most of you won’t be surprised to read that whilst I had the car in this state of undress I added a full suite of Audi A3 Infotainment items, the very items (RNS-E PU, BT Module and AMI along with a Bovee WMA1000 for BT media streaming) that were removed from Project 250 over the festive period.

Here’s the BT Module nicely located deep in the passenger footwell compartment (had to tidy up the Cruise Control retrofit that a previous owner had added):

EEA0B65A-32CB-482F-AA68-0225D876C523.jpeg

I did run into a few teething problems with the functionality of the RNS-E and it’s accompanying additional modules, they wouldn’t work/communicte perfectly which I found strange as they performed flawlessly in Project 250 with the non-DIS cluster. I initially connected the suite to the non-DIS cluster via the low speed Comfort CAN which worked okay but wasn’t getting the correct messages throughout and as such the BT Module wouldn’t work. I therefore went ahead and connected the infotainment suite into the high speed Drive Train CAN which initially was promising as the head unit asked for the 4 digit code, winner… Or so I thought. I quickly realised that this was also not the solution I was after. The head unit would no longer power down when the key was removed from the ignition, nor would the buttons illuminate when the the lights were switched on. On the up-side the BT module and AMI behaved exactly how they should.

I went through fault finding for a few hours to ensure I hadn’t got the CAN wires around the wrong way, but swapping them around resulted in no functionality so assume I had it all spot on in the first place. I came to the conclusion that the earlier cluster I had in the car was just not going to work, whether it be compatibility or a fault. Either way it was a shame as I had removed it and added the later fascia to it. Initially the instrument cluster looked like this:

9618D0DC-4D95-453B-999F-D82EBBBEDA92.png

Then last weekend it was amended to like this:

2BCA1165-793C-4F8F-A9EC-C33D680E096C.jpeg

A more refined look under the cowling with the aluminium dial surrounds. Note the coding of the 1.2 Mini-DIS, it’s not a perfect feature but it’s nice to have the instantaneous MPG display plus the smaller font size looks better to me.

Unfortunately the refreshed-look cluster had to go as I conuded the only way to get the latest upgrades to perform exactly how they should would be to have them connected to the low speed Infotainment CAN, to achieve this I would have to of course add full-DIS. Having studied all that was available information on our pages I considered myself fully armed to embark on a retrofit that I hadn’t done before. I was amazed at how simple it actually was and had it completed in an hour, I must admit that I had already made the wiper stalk to cluster loom up and had the washer bottle sensor wire ready to go which sped the whole process somewhat. Like most, I earthed the bulb check wires as had no intention of adding this feature anyway.

Before everything was refitted I thought I’d fully test the cluster to ensure all warning lamps were visible via the Output tests. All was good which was a relief. I then ensured the coding and adaption channels were as I needed them for the infotainment displays before finally matching the cluster to the ECU followed by matching the keys.

Once this was complete I proceeded to see how the RNS-E functioned along with its wider family of infotainment modules, including of course what happened when the was ignition switched on/off and lights switched on/off… Very happy to report that I was presented with a perfectly functioning cable free infotainment suite. Utterly over the moon with the outcome of a couple of hours tinkering. If I had to do this again in a future project then the installation time would of course be much quicker as it was a voyage of discovery to begin with, but now feel rather happy and confident with the process.

I can only guess that the original non-DIS cluster was either faulty or it was never designed to work with the anything more than what was originally offered with the A2. Either way it doesn’t matter now as I have this beauty reasonably close to the specification which Project OEM already boasts.

I was also hoping that the DIS upgrade would see the end of another fault I’ve had with the intermittent wiper speed switch (mentioned earlier in the thread) not responding correctly. Adding this known-good DIS wiper stalk didn’t cure the issue so guess the problem is elsewhere:

Here is the latest instrument cluster (it may not be the last…) installed which is performing it’s duties exactly how it should:

62E988D5-36B4-4051-9346-E7925301AC45.jpeg

Must of had a calculation issue as the odometer reading is off by 3 miles which I duly corrected

Again, very happy indeed.

Kind regards,

Tom

Brilliant Tom, well done indeed!

Sent from thin air
Hello Steve,

Hope all is well Sir. Yes it was very enjoyable to tackle and complete these retrofits, super happy with the results. The cabin really is getting there now.

I have a few more things up my sleeve to add which I’ll hopefully get to next weekend as have a full family itinerary to follow today and tomorrow.

Kind regards,

Tom

Hello again,

As Edd mentions above about having patience, we’ll this was tested when wishing to remove the number plate light fixings as the looked heavily corroded, I must add that the bulbs were fine but have no doubt been there for many many years so considered some preventative maintenance was in order.

I initially went ahead and purchased some of these as recommended by Steph last year:

A6DE1B8F-6680-453D-A51E-538C99F99C2E.jpeg

Before getting a decent headed screwdriver of the correct size into action I applied tiny squirts of penetrating fluid over about a week, 2-3 times a day. Never have I taken so long to remove just 4 screws but patience paid off as all 4 come out quite easily. I continued to add more fluid after each half turn and waited a few minutes before the next half turn.

When all 4 were removed I was utterly shocked at how thin the shanks had corroded to. They would sheared for sure if I wasn’t to have done this over a week.

The results are splendid and should save taking
the tailgate apart when a bulb eventually blows:

Please excuse the filthy exterior. I’m still nervous about washing as the freshly painted front bumper and door mirror covers may not have fully cured yet. Next weekend will see the karcher, bucket and sponge come out.

Kind regards,

Tom

Me again,

Apologies for adding further posts to the thread which could have been added together, been busy here and not really had much of an online presence to provide updates so only doing now when I remember what I’ve been up to.

Picking up on a previous post where I mentioned that the wipers wouldn’t function correctly on the intermittent setting. Well I thought the swapping of the standard wiper stalk to that of the DIS enabled wiper stalk would cure the issue. Unfortunately it didn’t so the issue was a lot deeper that first thought.

Cut a long story short I noticed something not quite right in the passengers footwell compartment:

731C2456-A7CF-4E99-9D52-BF23D746FD32.jpeg

Anyone notice anything that could be the cause of my wiper issue?

Look to the top of the picture and you’ll notice a possible aftermarket relay as it doesn’t have 602 stamped onto its top. It is a Topran aftermarket relay which I have since removed:

8299A817-66B2-4DC9-B0DF-B5FD4C9D7E5E.jpeg

I knew I had to swap the relay over at some point for the headlamp washer bumper to work but the relay that came with the bumper had sat in water for many months and wouldn’t work. After search high and low online I eventually found what I was after:

01273D55-391A-4CCA-9AC4-D78D8A519AFC.jpeg

Fitting the 615 relay has cured my wiper woes and of course enables the headlamp washer pump to perform its duties when the headlights are on and the wiper stalk is pulled towards the driver, another little win which has put a smile on my face.

Kind regards,

Tom

Hello All,

Anyone remember this post from December 2020 (Project OEM thread):

It shows the utterly amazing and dedicated work Stuart had been doing on in the background for the Audi Navigation Plus user-community. Hopefully most of you have been following the linked website and have since been updating your RNS-Es with each new release of Firmware, additionally I hope you have all paid for the Feature Pack as its so worth the minimal cost. If you're not that conversant with the additional features then its worth taking a little time to view the linked Project thread or just follow the link to https://rnse.pcbbc.co.uk/

Why am I mentioning this today anyway, well a new BETA firmware is availablwe which has the following new features:

Capture.JPG

The mention of radio station logos made me quite excited as I never thought the RNS-E would ever display such information, its astonishing what can be done with these antiquated head units:

I’m yet to play with the additional features and will hopefully get to them this weekend.

For now though I’m totally over the moon with the newly available features from the latest iteration of custom firmware.

More to follow…

Kind regards,

Tom

Hello all,

Whilst I’ve been away from the Clubs pages with work demanding a lot more of my time lately; I’ve still been managing to get some small tweaks done when I have a spare hour here and there. Most of the work has been completing the creation of looms for future upgrades.

The latest item fully prepared is this that I was sent some weeks ago (thanks Steve @A2Steve):

D98A2B19-E9BE-40DB-B07B-7558A8EBE187.jpeg

I’ve had the A5 QI Wireless Charger working in this awesome A2 for a while but only as a temporary modification as I was unhappy with the DIY cut-out I made for the Centre Stowage Tray (handbrake tray), what I was really after was a factory Centre Console from a Double DIN Dashboard A2 which I clearly now have. Only a couple of hours was it unboxed.

You’ll see that I’ve already cut the floor out of the handbrake tray and also marked up the Centre Console for cutting, time to get my trusty friend out to play:

BB792853-AF28-4D43-84FA-69B50DB521AE.jpeg

Popped outside to do the Dremel work then washed the whole thing in the shower. Here it is before it’s shower:

6A421225-628B-44A9-9311-0052A4AD7889.jpeg

Some of the sound deadening material on the inside is still wet so will leave the fitting until tomorrow when it’s fully dry. Maybe this evening if I put one of the log burners on.

Here is how it now looks after a quick coat of AutoGlym Rubber and Vinyl cleaner. I’ll continue with it whilst it drying but it’s already looking splendid and awaiting to be fitted:

25E7E297-1004-4E06-B401-781DB1AFD9C5.jpeg

Whilst I have the Centre Console out of the vehicle, I’ll see if I have more time to add yet another loom I’ve got prepared to rectify the lack of rear speakers…

Kind regards,

Tom

All looking good Tom.
Hello John,

Hope all is well Sir. Thanks for the encouraging words.

Progress is nowhere near as fast as it was with Project OEM but that was due to working from home during the initial stages of Lockdown. This brilliant A2, as you know, is in daily use commuting so can only provide it the updates I have in the pipeline when time permits over the weekends.

Future updates will include Bose, SideGuard and Rear PDC with OPS display on the RNS-E PU. There is also an idea of fitting a different RNS-E PU with a lager screen before I investigate adding and form of touchscreen or CarPC enhancements.

It should be boasting a very similar specification (or greater) to the other A2 here soon enough though.

Kind regards,

Tom

Looking very good Tom.

You forgot to mention a HFBMFSW! Don’t want those precious digits of yours getting cold over the winter! 😉

Haha, hello Erling,

Yes I’ll have to get that sorted too. I have a spare FBMFSW to use whilst I take the leather covering off the one currently fitted, the correct slip ring is of course already fitted. A nice satisfying stitching task whilst watching TV in the snug.

Becoming rather difficult obtaining the correct slip ring these days for reasonable money now. Guess most have been crushed over the years where dismantlers didn't realise how useful these can be for other Audi owners.

Kind regards,

Tom

Hello again all,

Just been on Stuart’s Custom Firmware website to see a BETA 2 (FW0302) which rectified the incorrectly radio station PTY category:

7C52B517-DB92-44A7-89B0-E0E697F6368D.png

You’ll of course notice the head unit categorises the groups with only the first letter, now rectified with FW0302:

Be careful when putting the handbrake down, I once smashed my phone after leaving it in that holder and a metal bit at the base of the handbrake arm smashed the screen!
