Be careful when putting the handbrake down, I once smashed my phone after leaving it in that holder and a metal bit at the base of the handbrake arm smashed the screen!
Hello Charles,

That’s very unfortunate. Yes I’m extremely careful about the handbrake coming down into the smartphone. Previously had an iPhone XR and it fitted perfectly but for the last year or so I’ve had the iPhone 13 Pro Max and it only just fits. There is definite possibility that I could damage the screen if I wasn’t careful.

That said there is still plenty of space below the wireless charger so could actually drop it further into the hole I’ve cut out. Will need minor fabrication of a plastic cradle but should be easy enough. I’ll give it a go in the coming weeks if time permits.

Thanks for the warning.

Kind regards,

Tom

Evening all,

I thought it about time to show you how the dashboard now presents itself to me when entering the cabin, first up though is to show the various arrangements I’ve had in this area since I started commuting in it early January.

Initially it looked like this:

Then purchased 1 of the very last 3 of these from Audi Tradition (thanks you Rick @Rickmeister and Simon @simufly):

But it wasn’t needed as I obtained this climate unit whilst the AT ordered item was in transit:

I just couldn’t bring myself to employ my trusty friend and reshape the beautiful hard touch climate unit so placed a Wanted thread, where I was saved by @A2Dreamer (thank you so much Pete). The needed double DIN variant arrived today whilst at work but didn’t stay boxed for long, quick hi-five to the family and I was back out on the driveway. The results:

With this missing item finally located and in my possession I can now share pictures of the recent dashboard transplant:

Extremely happy with the outcome.

There is quite a few more things I need to share with you all that makes this superb A2 even better than it initially was. Please allow me a little time to get the pictures and write up together.

Kind regards,

Tom

What a great job! That Navi unit is fantastic, has timmus linked it to a colour dis conversion?
Evening Rick,

Thank you for your encouraging words; appreciated. We must get together when you’re next on our shores Sir.

The Navi Unit is a RNS-E PU from the A3/TT/Seat Exeo and performs brilliantly for an antiquated head unit. The custom firmware really helps out with the updated displays.

This latest commuter started with non-DIS to then be coded for the Mini-DIS and finally I retrofitted DIS a few weeks ago. It’ll certainly do for now but I do see either a ColorMFA or 3DColorMFD being added at some point after retrofitting Rear PDC, something I’ll pick up on in the coming months as there is no rush as the current instrument cluster display is perfect.

Let me know when you’re next popping over.

Kind regards,

Tom

Tom if you need help with a 3DColorMFD I am able to do these but I’m not the fastest. And I haven’t done an a2 yet only a TT

Morning Edward,

That is an amazing offer, one that I Maynard take you up on in the next couple of months. I’ll let you know once I have the screen ordered and take it from there. Andy @Sidewinder has produced a stunning guide over on this thread:

The guide found on the above link is based on the A2 and utilises a Non-DIS instrument cluster, which makes it an easier upgrade to consider as you don’t need to obtain the correct DIS cluster. I’d rather use a DIS cluster (for the correct connectors) but I’m sure that between both you and Andy I should be able to achieve this.

Thanks again for the offer, we do have a great community on here don’t we.

Kind regards,

Tom

Looks great Tom. A great improvement over what you started with.
Morning Steve,

Yes, such a difference and improvement from where this project started. I know some purists out there will cringe at an early A2 with a complete black interior and black leather seats but I think it looks just right, contrasts the exterior colour perfectly.

I’m very happy with the way this one is coming along.

Kind regards,

Tom

Oh that is good, this will make it much easier as I noted I’d have to check pin out references as non official guide

After checking the guide, this looks a lot easier than the TT that involves cutting removal of the step motors and a lot more complications.

I don’t want to pollute the topic, But van you provide a guide for this upgrade on the TT? Thanks in advance👊

This is awesome Tom! Over here in Holland one can ask oneself If it is worthwhile doing such an upgrade, because of all upcoming taxes. Driving a diesel A2 is punishment here. Besides that, I would realtime love to do this upgrade. 👊👍 keep up the good work you’re doing

Evening Duncan,

Hope all is well, it’s been a while since we chatted and no need to apologise at all. Thank you for your kind words. Apart from having a documented history of what and when I’ve completed things on the fleet, my threads are mainly there to share what’s been done which hopefully assist others out there. If this thread has helped you in someway then job done Sir.

Kind regards,

Tom

Hello all,

Thought I’d share some progress with the DIS retrofit I recently (almost) completed as there were a few issues along the way and only finalised this morning.

Back story
This A2 left the factory as non DIS which I wanted to add as Paul supplied a correct revision DIS cluster with the sale. After the recent dashboard transplant I added the necessary wiring to the vehicle ready to add the supplied instrument cluster., all that was left was to get the MacBook out with VAG EEPROP Programmer to grab the SKCs.

When I finally got round to adding the supplied cluster I noticed that it was faulty as it wouldn’t match the key fobs. I could match it to the cars ECU but just couldn’t match the key fobs, something I’ve done so many times in the past. Additionally it had many missing pixels (easier to count how many it actually had) and the screen wasn’t perfectly aligned so guess someone had taken it apart before and damaged it somehow. I’ll probably look to strip this faulty cluster down for testing and adding either ColorMFA or 3DColorMFD.

To overcome this annoying set-back I installed a later generation (Q revision) cluster (already in the spares box in the garage) which was destined for a certain 2005 Dolphin Grey A2 that I never got round to retrofitting. I knew it had a perfect screen with no missing pixels but also knew the fuel gauage would read incorrectly. This picture (taken from Post #145) shows that it looks to be working exactly as it should:

IMG_6976.jpeg

When taking the car to refuel straight after the retrofit to test the fuel gauge, it went from half to empty and has been like it ever since. I’ve since been refuelling around 350-400 miles of commuting for the last month or so. Some nervous times with the Shell servies at Six Hills on my commuting route recently closing due to refurbishment.

To overcome this I knew I had 3 options:

1. Replace the Q revision cluster for another earlier revision which could be at great expense
2. Swap the fuel gauges over between an earlier cluster and a later cluster (I already have all I need here)
3. Obtain a later revision TDI fuel sender

I’ve been searching for both option 1 and 3 in the background as wanted to avoid option 2 incase I ruined a perfectly decent DIS cluster in the process but option 3 took hold earlier this week where I was (yet again) saved by Steve @A2Steve (thank you). Steve sent a revision F fuel sender yesterday and it arrived this morning. Luckily I was working from home and I was excitedly watching the ParcelForce drivers progress to me via the mobile app.

Once I see the driver was 10 minutes out and between rain clouds, I went out and removed the old fuel sender, but not before immaculately cleaning the area around the securing ring that holds it in place. When the delivery driver arrived I think I gave him quite a fright as I answered the door with a Stanley Knife with the blade out; to excitedly open my parcel.

Before the scared delivery driver had left the driveway I had the package opened and the replacement fuel sender in the tank. A couple of minutes later it was connected up and correctly secured in place. I started the car up and fortunately there was no air in the system, not even a hiccup, just purred away and even took it for a 10 minutes test drive.

The result is a perfect functioning fuel gauge so I guess my 2001 TDI has now been converted to that of the later generation. This was such a relief as I’ve had the orange low fuel warning on for a good month now; I didn’t know if this low fuel warning would override any other warnings that could have presented themselves in this time.

Whilst I was open to option 2, I wasn’t prepared to fund option 1 (as you never know what you’ve purchased until it’s fitted). Option 2 would have been another voyage of discovery but didn’t look too difficult as the fuel gauge is only held in place by 4 solder points. That said, I’m so glad Steve was able to assist with option 3. 10 minutes work that has worked out perfectly.

I’ve just nipped out to refuel to confirm the fuel gauge works as Audi intended:

Arrived at the local Shell services for some V-Power

About to leave the Shell services

Not seeing the needle go to empty has me full of smiles.

Hello all,

Another little update of the non-exotic variety. Since purchase I’ve noticed how quickly the tailgate falls if unaided and how heavy it feels to lift.

Therefore went onto AutoDoc on Monday to order these, the very same struts that I’ve had on the OEM A2 for a few years now:

IMG_6991.jpeg

The parcel arrived minutes ago (5 days from purchase to delivered):

In under 2 minutes the shiny new black struts were fitted and these old failed struts were removed:

I can confirm that the tailgate now raises very powerfully and smoothly then stops without shudder. It does of course mean that more effort is required to close the tailgate but that exactly the way it should be.

Nice improvement after 2 minutes work.

Kind regards,

Tom

Nice work. Bad tailgate struts are not really something important, but can be a real annoyance and replacing them is a really cheap and easy job to solve it.

Hello all,

It’s now been 6 months since I first started to commute in this amazing A2; covering just over 12k miles so guess it’s right to add a progress review.

If you’re reading this post then I guess you’ve read the thread from the beginning and will have seen what’s been done over the last few months, as such I’ll not add any pictures of what’s happened so far as most work has already been covered earlier on.

This commuter was absolutely spot on when handed over from Paul @PaulA2 and really didn’t need any further updates/upgrades but you all know me too well to not be satisfied with its budget specification; I like to tinker and have decided to invest my little spare time on research to take on all my own retrofits. After improving my soldering skills and having access to the necessary wiring diagrams I realised that it was the way forward as it’s much more satisfying doing your own work if you’re confident enough. Unsurprisingly, as the marque is some 20 years old, it’s astonishing how easy some of the retrofits actually are.

From memory is has benefited from the addition of:

1. Complete Soul interior transplant to rid it of the dated Swing interior plastics
2. Black leather SE heated seats with electric lumbar
3. DIS retrofit (revision Q instrument cluster and the associated fuel sender from a later generation A2)
4. Komfortblinker Blinker
5. Bespoke A2 Armrest bracket and C5 black leather armrest
6. Full winter pack (spray washer jets uprated to heated twin jets)
7. Factory collapsible spare
8. Soul auto dimming mirror with compass
9. Crystal clear headlamps
10. Double DIN dashboard transplant
11. A3 RNS-E PU with factory BT and AMI module (Bovee WMA1000)
12. A5 factory QI wireless charger
13. A6 C6 dual tone horn
14. A3/5 HFBMFSW with revision AL slip ring
15. Headlamp washer bumper
16. Pepperpots
17. Seat belt buckle warning wired to the cluster
18. Later generation CCCU

There is probably more as the above is from memory.

The items remaining to be retrofitted are:

1. Bose with full loom in the garage
2. SideGuard with full loom in the garage
3. Rear PDC with full loom in the garage
4. Arduino for Rear OPR display on the RNS-E PU in the garage
5. Reupholstered headlining (colour change), already have the fabric and adhesive
6. Auto Dab, a trial item which needs the MFSW to flick between channels
7. JDD already prepared
8. Votex kit (no spoiler just yet)
9. ColorMFA (Colour DIS)
10. Rear electric windows

There have been a few things that required rectification along the way:

1. Headlamps were dull so a fresher set were fitted
2. Front brakes started to warp after 5k miles so we’re replaced
3. Wipers didn’t function correctly, new wiper relay fitted
4. Yaw rate sensor fault after 2k miles so was replaced
5. Couple of rubber suspension parts were picked up on the recent MOT so we’re replaced

The above list is more than acceptable for a vehicle of its age. So what can I say about my new’ish commuter; simply brilliant.

I started commuting with the odometer reading 128444 miles back on the 4th of January and delivered me home this evening with 140460 miles on the clock. Pretty much 6 months and 12k miles.

The DIS MPG display has consistently been presenting me with 60mpg over the whole (smaller) tank of diesel but we all know the inaccuracy of the firmware of the factory DIS screen. I’ve been filling up at 400 miles and adding 27 litres of V-Power which is pretty much 67mpg over the range of the fuel tank, very admirable for a 22 year old car with standard gearbox. Sure it’ll increase slightly once I get the JDD ‘box fitted.

All the 2022 maintenance conducted by Paul has seen this enjoyable family member not miss a beat, it’s been such a pleasure to drive. So comfortable with its recent suspension refresh and has ensured many a smile with returning a very respectable mpg. The paint work needs a little work to small areas of lacquer peel/blister but I’ll get to that eventually; that said, the beautiful Jaipur Red paint really pops with a few layers of polish and wax. It attracts many comments in car parks or on the driveway from visitors. I’m so glad I deceived to grab this stunning A2 and selfishly happy to not see any interest on the sale thread after some 5 hours of listing, I just had to register interest.

My thanks still go out to Paul for a cracking deal on this one, thank you again Sir.

The next dramatic change will be fitting the Votex kit which is being dropped off at the paint shop next week, cannot wait to fit it!

I’ll add some pictures at the weekend after another layer (or 2) of wax has been applied. Hopefully I’ve managed to find some time to add a few more items that are sat waiting in the garage.

Kind regards,

Tom

Look forward to the next update Tom, THe votex kit will require many a photo please its going to be excellent! Also a run down on the JDD trnasplant would be interesting from an EWQ. Good work.

Morning Edd,

Some terrific work you’re doing on the Black Mambo thread, a great read. Yes plenty of picture will be added once the Votex kit has been fitted Sir. So looking forward to collecting the kit a few days after dropping it off next week. I have a week off work coming up next month which has the next round of tinkering already pencilled in.

Kind regards,

Tom
