I’ve now got an AF CCCU here with 2 fobs if you want to give that a try.

I hadn’t read your symptoms before this but a issue with the doors locking/unlocking and window movements on a cycle can also be a failed door lock or electric window motor as there’s a control unit within there too.

I learned from @timmus, while it shares its internals with the AF so it has the same good reliability, unfortunately the AE CCCU is for cars with rear electric windows only. Hopefully someone is keeping an AF on the shelf as a spare for such a car and can swap with you.
Ah! I should have done some more research, it wouldn't be such of an issue if the rear doors would lock with it... :(

There would be no charge for the AF unit 👍
Gah! You're too quick at replying! :D

That's a very generous offer - before I accept is there a chance that I can do anything to make sure either the lock or the door module is perfectly fine? 😕 I wouldn't want to deprive someone else of an AF unit that I don't need. :)

A good test for the door lock is whether the interior light comes on when you open the drivers door. Also if your fuel release button doesn’t work then it also indicates the door lock because the car won’t let you open the fuel cap with the car door closed.

Hmm, the fuel door button works but I've never tried it when I know that it's having locking issues (as this is the first time I've had a button 😄). It also reckons the door is only open when it's actually opened and it never flashes the door open symbol on the mini-DIS when it's having a freakout.

I also tried disconnecting the door module with the AE CCCU installed and the issues went away before refitting the Q unit and repeating the test.

I would be suspecting the driver’s door module
Not a common failure point but it’s a known one

Looks like Steve is sorting me out with one. 👍

Otherwise, is it possible that the lock itself might be a dud? I've heard people talk about micro switch failure, but I'm not sure if that would cause the symptoms I'm seeing.

I managed to find a Soul Black lower dash panel on eBay to replace my cracked one. It has a few scratches in the soft touch finish but all of the clips were present and it fits with the rest of the interior condition. It also arrived filthy, so it was scrubbed down and hosed off in the garden as soon as it arrived.

The fuse box cover was also cleaned after this photo and the colour matches perfectly!

Speaking of... My lower dash panel didn't come with fuse box cover and my existing one came broken, so I ordered and glued on @depronman's brilliant 3D printed clips. As you can see from the above, they work really well and means less broken A2 parts go in the bin! 12/10 would recommend. :D

Just need to find a fuse puller now...

I’ve seen them on eBay in the past. About a quid from memory

It is possible that the lock is to blame but the usual symptoms are not present on your car hence the door module or wiring break would be my first investigation points
