Absolutely nailing it Tom! Everyone of your pictures is an encouragement.
Thanks again for the kind words,

It’s feedback like this that makes me add more to the thread. I really do hope that other members start similar threads and try out some of the things we have all contributed to on here over time. Some things are of course best left to the experts but there are plenty of things that can be completed by us mere mortals with a rather basic set of tools along with access to this great Forum and YouTube.

The more I read other people’s threads the more confidence I feel I have to try things myself. It is amazing what can achieved with the information contained in the threads on here with the addition of the occasion input from our more experienced members.

Kind regards,

Tom

Evening all,

No pictures of what progress was made today as it is all out of sight type tasks.

I finally met @Proghound (a real pleasure sir) whilst visiting @timmus for some completion of retrofits. I can now commute knowing the SideGuard is fully installed along with being able to use the 12v socket in the luggage area.

The Rear PDC retro fit is almost complete. All I need to do now is remove the rear bumper, cut the holes, insert the already colour coded sensors then refit said bumper.

I also collected a Votex Style Rear Spoiler supplied by @Birchalls Son, which @Birchall dropped off at Ian’s for me. Carl/Steve thank you very much for making this happen for collection today.

I’ll get pictures of my full Votex kit (unpainted) on here when possible, it will probably be a few months until I have the ‘spare’ funds to get them all painted. I can only but hope it looks half as good as Graham’s @audifan Azure Blue A2 clad in Votex.

Kind regards,

Tom

I insist the pleasure was all mine in finally meeting you today Tom @2work, and getting a good look around your gorgeous A2. That really is one to be proud of and that's even before it's finished :)

Did you see this can loan you the cutter
Morning,

I actually have the correct cutter here. I purchased it a couple of years ago when I first started the planning of Rear PDC on my previous A2.

Soon as I find the motivation to remove the rear bumper I’ll get it into use. It’s a task I’ve done a few times and will do it next week as I’m not in the office Thursday and Friday.

Quite excited to see the colour match of the recently painted PDC Sensors.

Kind regards,

Tom

What no pictures. Thats just teasing!!!!
More pictures to follow Graham. I’m collecting my newly painted Votex Rear Spoiler on Tuesday when I’m next in the office. I was so tempted to drive to Lincoln (used a body shop near my place of work) yesterday but decided I had driven enough lately.

Kind regards,

Tom

Morning everyone,

I know I’ve been quiet on the this thread the last few weeks. Main reason is that Project OEM has been in constant use commuting from Coalville to Elgin. The route I took is just over 500 miles each way with a 12 mile daily commute whilst up there.

The A2 has clocked up 3200 miles in 3 weeks and not once missed a beat. I am so happy as it’s the greatest mileage achieved since the purchase. Some of you will notice that my previous A2 died at the very end of February and this amazing A2 was purchased very early in March. Only a couple of weeks later I found myself working from home and had only been used for commuting to Lincoln for 3 weeks before the lockdown.

During the recent high mileage commute the best economy I achieved was 73mpg, which is just amazing. That was with the cruise control set to the road speed limit. This glorious A2 has the smaller sized fuel tank but easily got from Coalville to Elgin without a refill. This mpg was with Shell V Power. When I refuelled with any other expensive diesel from Esso and BP the best I could achieve was 68mpg. Now I know that there are so many more variables like ambient temperature and road condition (dry/damp/wet) that played a part in this but for me I am going to stick with Shell. Mainly as I pass 3 Shell Services during my normal commute.

I have not used the Fuelly App, just the factory DIS for this information. I know that there are inaccuracies in this system but I know how I always drive and what I was achieving on my normal commute. I also think my tyre choice to clad my Pepperpots might also be throwing these figures out, the circumference is probably different than what the ECU/Cluster is using for calculation.

The rev counter sits at 2500rpm when I’m sat at 70mph and understand that it should be sat at 2600rpm so guess that I’m actually cruising (safely) slower than is displayed.

The interior improvements conducted over the lockdown were fully used/observed during the constant 8.5 hours each way on the commute. It was an absolute pleasure to sit in my aluminium cabin for such a long time. Checking the beautiful rear view mirrow with the digital compass and not seeing sagging headlining fabric on the rear was putting a smile on my face for miles.

The 2019 navigation disc in the stunning RNS-E PU was actually better than google maps on my iPhone XR. Google maps, on my first commute was showing off how intelligent it was by trying to save me minutes by using the odd B Road which turned out to be a total waste of time. After that I turned off google maps and only used the Audi Navigation System, very impressed how good it was with a recent disc inside it.

Throughout the last 3 weeks I have driven frugally at the speed limit but every now and then, I put my foot down. I am just amazed at how quick and responsive the 3 pot engine is. I have had Paul @depronman tend to a couple of things for me which has changed the way the feels when I request for a quick overtake etcetera. Thank you Paul.

More pictures will be added to the thread next week after a collect an item I have had in the painters during my work way up North.

Kind regards,

Tom

Evening all,

You’ll read above that Project OEM has served me brilliantly the last 3 weeks commuting to Scotland. I am a frugal driver and it has astonished me the MPG that I managed to achieve. That said though I thought as it has done so well I would see if I was able to give it a little treat.

After reading the MPG figures that was possible with a 6 speed gearbox and that various gearboxes are confirmed to fit with minimal work, I set out to start searching for a MYP gearbox. I understand that this would be best suited to my driving style.

Having already contacted Rob and Marcus @chumsofmanutd at WOM Automotive, I was informed that they have mastered the procedure to transplant the MYP into the A2. I let them know that I was interested if I could find a gearbox over the next few months that I would get myself into their busy diary.

Therefore the search started Sunday evening and there are actually quite a few MYP gearboxes available around the £500 price tag. 1 did standout though, from a 1.6 TDI Passat B7 which had 35k on the clock and reported working before being broken. It was listed as the cheapest MYP on eBay, I knew I was in no rush for this upgrade so submitted a rather ridiculous offer for this already cheap gearbox. Within a few hours I had an email stating that I needed to pay for an eBay item, quite concerned with this as I hadn’t purchased anything I logged into eBay. My completely cheeky offer had been accepted in the MYP gearbox.

Here it is:

Quite happy with myself I made contact with the seller and made arrangements to collect it. Only 1 hour from Coalville, which was the main reason I put the offer in. Also informed Rob @chumsofmanutd that I was needing to be booked in for surgery much sooner than initially previously discussed.

With no meetings planned today my purchase was collected this morning from North Nottingham and quickly taken a little further West to Stoke and dropped of with Marcus to initiate the preparatory work required for a perfect fitment.

I cannot wait for the phone call to let me know when I can take my A2 to WOM Automotive to have this conversion completed.

Just need to nip to a breakers yard now to find a decent condition Audi A6 C6 6 speed gear knob emblem.

Having this conversion should see me being able to achieve the same economy manage at 60mph but I’ll be able to join the rest of the rat race at 70mph. Can only guess that if I was to continue to drive frugally at 60mph the mpg could be amazing.

Kind regards,

Tom

What’s the preparatory work that needs to be done to the gearbox out of interest? Just a check over and new seals?

Tom. My jdd box provides the same ratio in 5th as your myp will in 6th
What I found was that 60 is no longer the most optimal as the engine is at slightly low revs for optimal power/torque
65mph is actually now the sweet spot but 70mph is only slightly worse
These are all true mpg as per sat nav which I have now used to calibrate the speed so it reads a true speed not slightly over - I just prefer it that way

Evening again,

Some of you will recall that I collected a rather special item during my visit at Ian’s @Proghound last month to,1 finally meet him and 2 to catch up with Tom @timmus for some completion work on some of the retrofits I had attacked myself during the lockdown. Thank you to you both again.

Whilst I was there I collected one of the Votex Style Spoilers that Carl @Birchalls Son has produced. Steve @Birchall very kindly dropped it off the day before whilst he to was having some @timmus treatment to his A2.

The spoiler looked great and felt very sturdy. I was very happy with my purchase, another item that I thought I’d never get my hands on was now in my possession. I have pictures which I’ll add below but they really do but do the item any justice what so ever:

Some may think it looks a little untidy but that is just the adhesive lines from where the different parts were glued together. I can confirm that it only required minimal filling and preparation prior to it being painted. It really is a stunning item that feels very strong. It is reported to be a little heavier than a factory item but couldn’t let you know the difference in weight as I didn’t weigh it and don’t know how much the factory item weighs.

Before I set off on my first journey to Scotland I dropped the spoiler off at the body work shop near my work. I anxiously waited to collect it for 3 weeks. It has since been collected (Tuesday) but only this afternoon has it been fitted.

I gave both the factory spoiler and the newly painted Azure Blue Votex Style Spoiler a quick key with 240 grit paper, wiped down with the correct wipes to ensure no grime or dust remained. Then put a good bead of silicone adhesive down, which was supplied by the painter and highly recommend by themselves. They told me Tigerseal is ok but they only use this product:
D1A5E6AF-CC1E-4D68-8B6A-B2B44320B3D8.jpeg

Then finally offered the new spoiler to its new home.

No pictures just yet as I was busy straight after fitting and by the time I had finished doing Top Dad ‘stuff’ it was too dark. Pictures to follow tomorrow morning/evening.

All I can say is a massive thank you to Carl and Steve as my A2 looks magnificent wearing its new spoiler. Just need to find the funds now to get the rest of the Votex kit painted.

More pictures and explanation of how amazing these non factory spoilers are to follow in the morning. I really am over the moon with the way it looks though.

Kind regards,

Tom

@depronman , I might have misread your post, but can the speedometer reading actually be calibrated? With VCDS?

Evening David,

Marcus informed me that the gearbox will be sent away to be machined to remove a few millimetres off of the open part that mounts to the engine and contains the clutch, bell housing is it? Once the material has been removed the gearbox mates to the engine without fault and there is no need to change the starter motor.

It’s stuff well beyond my capabilities as never messed around with these mechanical items before. I know the gearbox is in the right place with a team of mechanical ninjas who I will always listen to follow what they suggest, WOM Automotive are absolutely amazing at what they do and even better for us, their knowledge on the A2 is simply total.

Hope this helps sir.

I’ll finish off the headlight switch over the next few days and have it to you just after the weekend.

Kind regards,

Tom

Great work again Tom. I very nearly bought this car off Bob at one point this year. Very pleased it then went on to you instead as it’s really come together brilliantly. Looking forward to seeing some photos.

Evening Paul,

Soon as the conversion is complete I will be that annoying driver (in the correct lane I must add) sat at 65mph.

Thanks for the advice.

Tom

Well I am in credit for a CDIS with Tom. Soon as he has the required items in stock I’ll be paying him a visit, whether that be at yours or his.

Failing that I’m sure we will meet up now and then with my Brother-in-Law only a 5 minute walk from you.

Kind regards,

Tom
