Aarrrrrghhh you big tease Tom :D
Seriously though, well done on completing your dream spec A2, it was already a superb machine when I saw it and I look forward to hosting you again some day.
Well I am in credit for a CDIS with Tom. Soon as he has the required items in stock I’ll be paying him a visit, whether that be at yours or his.

Failing that I’m sure we will meet up now and then with my Brother-in-Law only a 5 minute walk from you.

Kind regards,

Tom

Great work again Tom. I very nearly bought this car off Bob at one point this year. Very pleased it then went on to you instead as it’s really come together brilliantly. Looking forward to seeing some photos.
What can I say Steve,

Thank you for pointing me in Bobs @Jellybean direction and for not purchasing it yourself.

I’m sure that it wouldn’t have got as far as it has so far so quick if I hadn’t been working from home.

My previous A2 hadn’t been treated in this manner in the 5-6 years of ownership.

Thank you very much again for coming to my rescue back in late February.

Kind regards,

Tom

Good evening to you all once more,

In light of the Votex Style Spoiler pictures that I owe you all, I thought I’d share with you another item I recently purchased to go with another rare item I now have:
B5A5610A-933F-47AE-BB24-D0AA24E1EFA6.jpeg

DA0EE505-48DB-4E23-A103-95DC1FBBAD6D.jpeg

782397F7-9643-4A74-9A14-F970D1B4346D.jpeg

I’m certain that this is not the Votex item that you all want to see, sorry you’ll have to wait until the sun comes back out in the morning.

For those of you who aren’t too sure what it is, it is the factory supplied torque wrench that should have been shipped with the factory roof bars.

It’s essentially a 5mm hex key which I have plenty of. This item does assist with getting the securing bolts as tight as possible without causing damage to the clamped area.

I do have a small torque wrench that I use on my road bike for various tasks as I fully maintain it myself but thought this easier to carry with the A2 underneath the rear light cluster inspection panel.

I’m sure some of you will be frustrated that this wasn’t the pictures you were hoping for. Sorry but I couldn’t resist.

Kind regards,

Tom

@depronman , I might have misread your post, but can the speedometer reading actually be calibrated? With VCDS?
VCDS as a calibation mode where by the needles are moved to set positions, you can remove the needles and then push the needles into position. I then drove the car and checked the actual speed using sat nav and compared this to the speedo are 30 50 70 mph.
I found the same delta erro at all speeds. I then went back to VCDS and set the needles to the set position, then pushed the needles back into place at 100kph - the delta difference

Re checked against sat nav and 100% correct at 30 50 70 mph

Hope this clarifies
Cheers,
Paul

Thanks for explaining, seems clever. One of my A2s are a bit too optimistic on the speed, at 94km/h the reading is 100.
Apologies for thread swerve.

Tom,

Firstly, absolutely no worries or rush on the headlight switch, it will still be some weeks before I take delivery of the car and you are doing me a huge favour here - so do just fit it in around your other commitments without priority!

Secondly, interesting that WOM wish to have the bell housing machined- I wonder why they wouldn’t just fit the starter from the same type of engine as that from which the gearbox was mounted to as is the conventional wisdom amongst members here- could you ask them? In case they’ve discovered some flaw associated with going that route that the rest of us should know about!

Thirdly, you will not be annoying at 65 mph at all, you’ll be making good progress in mostly the 1st and 2nd lanes, dispatching lorries etc. with ease - quicker in fact than your previous cruising speed. You’d hence only be annoying to others if you then lacked lane discipline and didn’t move over when the overtakes are done with - which from the above it’s easy to see wouldn’t be an issue (I find that roughly half of motorway drivers “play the game”, with the remainder glazed over and unaware of what’s going on around them for the most part).

As a bonus, you’ll arrive perhaps a quarter of an hour quicker on your long Scotland trips too, not to mention fresher (less time driving combined with lower noise levels) - and having saved money on the fuel too! All of these combined makes the swap worthwhile to my way of thinking - in a way that just considering the fuel saving does not.

You'll definitely have to keep updating us on your take on the driving experience differences and whether you agree with this or not though!

Morning all,

For those of you who are considering a six speed gearbox, whatever product code, it might be worth giving these guys a call as their prices really are good. They may not have what you’re after in stock but their prices are great so might just be worth to wait for them to have what. They are of course a breakers and informed me that they already make 400% profit on the cars they purchase so they’re happy to not be too greedy with their parts prices. Hopefully this will ethic will last.

I got a good feeling about them after chatting for some time whilst I was collecting my MYP box and will certainly be a returning customer in the future on the next project. They do delivery which which is included price. The only reason I didn’t get my item delivered was the reasonable close proximity to home and I wanted it in the hands of Rob and Marcus straight away.

I’m not sure if this breaches anything so please do advise I am indeed over stepping the mark here, but here is their details:
CB18962F-400C-42CF-9BDE-AD2CA960C6D1.jpeg

They have my details and will let me know when they get another MYP gearbox in.

Hopefully this helps someone out.

Kind regards,

Tom

Morning all,

I think you’ve all been waiting long enough now.

After dropping the boys off at school this morning I gave this fantastic A2 a quick wash then hit it with my Autoglym products to make it look a little better than it did year day after the 180 mile round trip collecting the MYP gearbox.

Once finished with my usual products then gave it 3 coats of Meguires Ultimate Paste Wax. The results are actually very good but I cannot wait to try the Dodo Juice which will arrive tomorrow. But for now, my daily commuter looks nice and shiny.

Here’s some shots of it once all products had been used:

The paint work on this isn’t in the best condition in some areas, but it’s an 18 year old daily commuter. It does look really nice though and matches the almost immaculate interior.

Here are the promised images of its new spoiler. The colour match is brilliant, may not appear so in the pictures due to the varying angles of the back of the A2:

Next job will to be to purchase the correct sized bolts to insert into the holes. I see that as the finishing touches which be a ‘5 minute’ job another time.

For now I am totally happy with the way it looks. The Votex Style Spoiler that Carl @Birchalls Son can supply is just brilliant. It put a massive grin on my face earlier whilst seeing it shine via the rear view mirror as I was out doing some local errands.

I cannot recommend this item enough. I’m sure Carl has the price exactly right here and that is probably way cheaper than what you would pay for a used factory item.

Quick update on my 6 speed gearbox:

I’ve had contact from Rob @chumsofmanutd at WOM Automotive and my MYP will be fitted early November, cannot wait. Once Ive paid for said conversion the ‘spare funds pot’ will need to build up before I can get the rest of the Votex kit painted. Maybe Santa will treat Project OEM!

Kind regards,

Tom

Afternoon,

As I was not totally happy with the transformation of the Swing Fuse Cover, mainly as it was missing the vital item that is intended to be there, I purchased the said item from eBay a few weeks ago. Thank you @damadgeruk for the link you posted a few weeks ago.

Here is the the fuse cover sporting it’s fuse removal tool:
3FCE98B5-3C3C-4F08-BF9B-A8C65BC789AD.jpeg

Another satisfying job ticked off the list. The Volico Paint is holding up very well and cannot recommend it enough.

Tom

Afternoon David,

I’m not entirely sure why the removal of some material is required but will ask later on. I completely trust them with my gearbox and A2 though. I’m sure there is a very good reason which someone else might jump in and explain before I have the answer.

Yes I know the driving crowd you mention. When I was commuting at 60mph I sometime had to leave the inside lane, skip the middle lane and progress to the outside land to overtake. Why some people sit in the middle lane at 50-55mph is very annoying. I pride myself on my lane discipline.

65mph will be my new economical speed once the conversion is complete.

Kind regards,

Tom

Fascinating thread! Thanks for sharing @2work !
Thanks you for your kind words Jim,

As I have said before, its comments like yours that ensures I continue to add posts as I get on with things. Hopefully other will do the same and share their experiences.

The more information posted on here the easier it is for the rest of us to have a go at tasks which we thought not doable at home/DIY.

Kind regards,

Tom

I'm guessing that the gearbox will be trimmed to line the flywheel up with the pinion or the starter motor. Without doing so they are a few mm out of line and so the factory starter motor can't be used. Its a good indication of the attention to detail they put into their work.

Tom, now that you are fitting a votex kit, I can't help but think that it will overwhelm the pepperpots. Have you considered fitting spacers to beef them up a bit?

Tom, now that you are fitting a votex kit, I can't help but think that it will overwhelm the pepperpots. Have you considered fitting spacers to beef them up a bit?
I have steve,

I’ve still got the 15mm spacers in ‘MyeBay’ that you mentioned some time ago on another thread, might have been 20mm actually, cannot remember.

The economy the Pepperpots provide wants me to keep them on the car so yes, they will be beefed up at some point.

I do prefer the look of the Sport or the Ronal Avus wheels but mpg is always a factor as it’s my daily commuter.

Morning all,

Well not much has happened with my trusty steed recently, been far too busy inundating your all with various and probably far too many lists throughout the Bespoke A2 Footrest venture, which is pretty much at the end now. I'm hope you're all very happy with what you have purchased. Only a couple yet to be delivered by hermes.

Below is my (1 of 3) footrest fitted to Project OEM, I really am happy the way this turned out.

Footrest 2 is for the next project and footrest 3 is my spare should I ever need it, might frame it and hang it in the garage as it does look good!

Fitted next to Audi rubber floor mats:

Fitted along side Twist floor mats:

75E68EEC-2673-4892-A1CB-72CA39395739.jpeg

The complimentary infills from Paul @depronman really do finish it off. Ill be filling the 'A2' with black windscreen adhesive soon enough to stop any debris clogging up the cut out. Honestly Im not sure about the Twist footrest background now and would be happy to change it to a black footrest. This will do for the winter months when I have the rubber floor mats fitted, but in the summer I have a beautiful set of Twist carpet floor mats, which I think a black footrest will not sit next to so nicely. Decisions decisions! Thoughts anyone?

Continuing on... Earlier in the thread I mentioned considering adding an Audi Bluetooth Control Module to do away with the Xcarlink as a Handsfree option. The Xcarlink is a great addition for streaming from my iPhone (mainly Virgin radio on the way to work) but not the best at facilitating a crisp clear call over the audio system. Suffice to say I have now removed the microphone connected to said Xcarlink and fitted an Audi Bluetooth Control Module (8P0862335H). Here is what was purchased:

Screen Shot 2020-10-14 at 23.05.39.png

After some teething problems it is now fully working, it allows for a perfectly clear call and I no longer have to continuously repeat the dialogue, this is, to me worth every penny of he £100 I paid for the full installation kit. The kit consists the BT Control Module (8P0862335H), Foam holder for safe and OEM look fitting, PnP harness and the microphone (although already had microphone fully fitted to the overhead light switch panel for SDS utility on the RNS-E only)

Getting it working correctly didn't come without its problems as I just didn't know the correct coding so have played around for a few evenings which was very frustrating. I honestly do not know if the coding is correct but it functions exactly how I think it should and I am very happy with the results.

The coding looked fairly simple initially as when you're coding, the help menu pops up to give you the possible options. I also knew I had to change the RNS-E coding to add the telephone option. Where I had real problems was maintaining connectivity between the iPhone and the module. I now know where I went wrong for a few evenings, I was coding the BT Module with one of the CAN options as I know the A2 runs CAN. There was only 1 option for CAN without MFSW (I use the CAR button for SDS using the PCBBC firmware) so chose that. Initially it would connect and work perfectly but wouldn't reconnect when I went back to the car a while later. The only way I could get the iPhone to reconnect was to remove the harness connector from the module and reconnect it, soon as it was reconnected the phone would also connect in seconds and work perfectly but the same problem would be evident when I next went out to the car. I thought I had purchased a faulty unit and started contacting the seller who was willing to send me another module.

Whilst considering removal and repackaging it up I thought I'd jump on Google to see if I could find any answers to similar problems, true enough I found a thread on another Audi website, it talked about quite a lot of stuff that meant nothing to me (different model but similar age) but did pick up the fact that some similar aged Audi's use Kline for some communications, armed with this new information I thought I'd give it one last try before I gave up as I remembered seeing Kline Diagnostics as an option in the coding of the control module.

After firing up VCDS for the umpteenth time, played around with the coding to add the Kline Diagnostics option and it worked straight away. This took me 4 evenings to work out (perhaps I should have asked the question on here in the first place) but I a really am happy now. My iPhone connects within seconds every time I jump into the A2 and switch the ignition.

As for locating the Module in the A2, I found this picture of a retrofit that @motosport had completed a while ago by Tom @timmus:

P1040288.jpg

This is my passenger footwell using the same foam holder, it keeps it safe and still maintains an OEM look:

Picture 5

While I’m in the passenger footwell I thought I’d show my 4 keys that are fully working with the AF CCU. Do I need 4 keys, not really:
A610ABF7-E21C-4B34-B58B-26FEBCDBA4B1.jpeg

Here is the DIS and RNS-E Telephone option showing it has complete control (nothing greyed out) of my iPhone XR which is brilliant for an old BT module interrogating a newish mobile phone.

Im sure this next image will look so much better once Tom @timmus receives stock for CDIS:
029CEC48-6600-4735-B27B-567A55507A1E.jpeg

Not sure why it states Telephone 3, I have tried to rectify this but not succeeded yet, thoughts?:

Complete integration with my XR:
33DEC067-8AF2-409C-A3C3-1656DB2578F7.jpeg

Some may think that £100 for a handsfree option is expensive but I wanted to have crisp clear calls (which I now have) as I do a lot of calls whilst commuting. Said commute is some 13-15 hours in the A2 a week so it had to be the best it could be. Additionally I wanted total integration into the RNS-E PU along with SDS. Now I have completed this retrofit I believe I could replicate it in such a short time now and may well fit one in the next project...

Next job to do in this well equipped A2 is get the RNS-E PU working as perfect as possible to enable the over speed warnings along with picking up the speed pulse. Some of you will know that the 193G Revision has hardware missing inside so it will not pick up the speed pulse regardless of it being connected to the instrument cluster. This also goes for the 193B Revision (which does have the necessary hardware) where I understand it doesn't pick up the speed pulse once its running the PCBBC Firmware (to enable the Road Speed Limit Icons etcetera). Well there is indeed a way and I'm about to see what is possible, give me a week and I'll report with my findings

Kind regards,

Tom

Afternoon all,

Here is the next item (arrived whilst I was typing the above post and was not expecting it so quickly) I’m going to be fitting to my joy of an A2:

04643B30-7050-46BD-8FA0-2EC519929FEB.jpeg

This is an Arduino Unit made up by Stuart from the RNSE PCBBC website. It’s job is to act as the missing hardware inside the later RNS-E PU Revisions so it’s able to pick up the speed pulse from the instrument cluster.

This will allow me to have the over speed warnings along with having the RNS-E know exactly where I am should I be travelling for some time in a tunnel or loose GPS visibility for any other reason.

In addition will also allow the RNS-E to know whether reverse is selected or not. At the moment my RNS-E thinks reverse is always engaged which I wanted to overcome should I wish to add a reverse camera sometime in the future.

Not being an expert at all on things like this but I understand that the RNS-E PU 193B Revision does come with the hardware to read the speed pulse signal but (getting a bit out of my depth here but I’ll carry on) if it’s running the PCBBC Firmware then for some reason it cannot read said speed pulse signal. Obviously the easy solution is to roll back the firmware to a factory iteration but then you loose the ability to have Road Speed Limit Icons in the bottom right hand corner of the display along with the other features from the PCBBC firmware.

Rambled on long enough and to be honest I don’t fully understand this area, all I know is it will make my RNS-E PU work the way I want it to. The price for this Arduino unit delivered was £25. Stuart said he can do produce them cheaper if I were to ask for a group/bulk order. My personal thoughts are that a RNS-E PU 193G Revision plus £25 for an Arduino Unit is certainly still much cheaper than what I see the 193B revisions go for (which don’t natively display the Road Speed Limit Icons).

The next unit(s) he manufactures for the A2 will have longer tails to connect into the Quadlock/Harness.

Time to quickly improve my soldering skills and get this fitted, probably over the weekend after I’ve been to Lincolnshire to collect Project 250 from @Nicholas Golland.

Kind regards,

Tom

Evening all

After a conversation with @devans this evening I now know what the next upgrade will be, an Audi Media Interface (AMI).

Something like this:
F806B789-E59E-4E24-B836-0828CDA441CA.jpeg

9043D7F1-01A9-45D0-9441-CF01239E9C13.jpeg

This so I can have my iPhone further integrated into the RNS-E and removing the Xcarlink altogether. I have enjoyed the Xcarlink but now want a more OEM option.

Anyone have one available before I search the breakers yards or just purchase one from eBay.

Kind regards,

Tom

Cracking result Tom, I am tempted to go this route also, as you know I’m all for oem and love seeing your phone come up on the dis ?

Evening all,

Problem solved, although turns out to not have been a problem in the first place.

After reading through the RNS-E operating manual I come across this image:
image.jpg

Seeing this image showing ‘Telephone Vodafone’, it’s now quite clear to me why mine displays ‘Telephone 3’.
601E52E6-5BE2-4DA7-8B8A-A456CB140161.png
Yes I’m on the Three network. I was searching for some time to understand why I couldn’t get my iPhone to be stored/displayed as ‘Telephone 1’. Some things are just too obvious for me to comprehend!

Kind regards,

Tom
