Project part-ex rescue

Peppa went off to her new home on Wednesday. So where do you go after having an A2 with massive amounts of mods? I still don't know the answer to that one but here's a little project I'm working on at the moment.

While Mart was viewing Peppa he mentioned that his current A2 was really at the end of the road. I hadn't really paid much attention to it when he pulled up but seeing as I needed wheels to keep me moving I suggested a part ex on Peppa.

She really was looking sorry for herself. This is no way a criticism of Mart, he had used it as a workhorse and so was kept as such. She had all of the lower grilles missing, a big scrape/scuff running right down the drivers side. The alloys were a mixture of brown and black, and I'm pretty sure the car hadn't been washed for at least 18 months. The interior had been a dog carrier and so was probably one of the dirtiest interiors of an A2 I've come across. The ABS warning light was flashing red, brake pad warning light illuminated and so the service indicator. I didn't test drive it because Mart had managed to get it down from the Midlands to South Wales so it couldn't have been that bad.

Despite all of the above it looked pretty straight and although the panels were dirty I couldn't see any other damage to the paintwork.

At worst it was a set of wheels to keep me moving for a couple of weeks until I could find my next project car so the deal was done.

I gave it a quick wash to get the majority of the mould off the bodywork and have the interior a quick Hoover. It was getting dark then so called it a night.

What happened the next morning I wasn't expecting. I had a look at her in the daylight and with just that one wash from the night before was a half decent looking A2.

I got her insured and headed out for a test drive. Everything felt good, there were no nasty clunks, she pulled well and all gears selected well. For a car with 157k on the clock and no service history to hand she felt pretty damn good.

So today I set at her, armed with my machine polisher, a host of leaning products and well this is the result. Had to go to the extreme of using oven cleaner on the alloys :)

So far I've
sorted the brake warning light
Fitted 4 centre caps and
Fitted a lower grille and foglight covers
Fitted my private plate

On the immediate to do list is

- Oil and air filter change
- Change fuel filter (She's a little hesitant at higher revs)
- Get the windscreen replaced due to a 4 inch crack.

How long I'll keep her for I just don't know, but if I do sell her she'll be in much better shape than when she arrived.

It's come up looking really nice
my favourite colour too

Service day today

- New air filter
- New oil filter
- New fuel filter
- New oil
- New coolant temperature sensor
- Fixed brake pad warning sensor
- Fitted a set of winter wheels/tyres

Also fitted a fuel filler drain screw from @depronman . Hadn't appreciated until I fitted it what a fantastic piece of engineering it is.

I'd been experiencing a bit of a misfire under heavy load which I was hoping was just a dirty fuel filter and not an injector on the way out. New fuel filter fitted and thr car now drives beautiful.

thanks Steve, the fuel drain screws I make are somewhat over engineered, but I really can't produce a poorly engineered product, it just goes against my DNA

Great that the running issues have been resolved with a change of fuel filter, so often overlooked

Cheers,
Paul

Yes, it was only under harder acceleration, and had no other signs of injector failure so could only be fuel starvation. Just glad it wasn't the tandem pump as it would have been a bit more expensive.

This little car seems to have wanted to be saved as all the problems so far have been simple fixes

Been out on a 20 mile round trip today and mpg is up from 45 before service to 56mpg after. Looks like it still needs a thermostat though as it's not maintaining it's temperature. Should see better mpg again after that's fitted.

A good friend of mine said the other day "old Audi's don't die they just get neglected" and that couldn't be more true than with this little car.

When it came to me it could have been mistaken as being an end of life A2.

- abs warning light
- brake pad warming light
- low coolant warning light
- cracked windscreen
- misfire under load
- trim missing and
- very very dirty

4 weeks on, a bit of time and £250 spent (including a set of winter tyres) and it's now running perfectly and returning 51 mpg for me on a short commute up and down the Welsh mountains.

Sometimes some cars just want to be saved :)

Hey Steve, no service history so don't forget the Cam belt change. I bought my A2 last week with the garage saying Cam belt chaged by VW in the ad. Wasn't till I get home and looked through the service book I found that it was changed in June 2013 and has done another 40K since then so tomorrow I am having a specialist change it and the water pump for £294 groan ☹
