Project Pine Green 1.6

Having now got the car back into proper use, its got me thinking about more power. It's certainly very quick, but i'd like just that little bit extra.

I've been down this route before and some of you may remember how that ended up 💥 My turbo'd FSI that went bang.

I've been looking into what can be done with the 1600 16v golf engine and there are both turbo and supercharger options out there, but they both involve forging the engine internals. That's a cost i don't want to outlay at the moment.

Now the arguement could be had that i should just buy a powerful car to begin with. I have a powerful car, (a 300hp Jaguar) but I like A2's :)

Coming to my point eventually, the other way to speed up a car is to lose weight, so I think this is going to be the next option.

A guy via one of the facebook clubs has followed a similar thought process and got an FSI down to 815kg, so that's a very decent weight saving.

Has anyone come across anything in the archives around the weights of certain A2 parts?

Afternoon Steve,

On my found this thread so far:

I’m guessing you’ve already come across the above thread. I’ll sit down this evening tj see if I can find anything further for you Sir. There must be something somewhere to satisfy your thoughts.

Kind regards,

Tom

Sounds to me like you've now got the perfect A2. Think you've achieved dangerously close to perfection, lots more power brings lots more grief! But you know that already, Steve.

All the best,

Simon

Thanks Tom, have read through that now. It seems to be going a bit extreme with manufacturing parts in magnesium to save a quarter of a kg.

What I have seen from the thread is that removing the parcel shelf, rear seats and false floor give you a saving of almost 50kg. That's like carrying a small adult.

Perhaps with the addition of front and rear carpets, glovebox and possibly the doorcards that could be close to 75kg which would be a great saving on an 875kg car.

I suppose the one issue you have with rear seats etc is the weight distribution on an already front heavy car?

The ultra lightweight version of the 3L cars has an special lightweight rear seat you might be able to find. The drawback is that they are not foldable at all.
But indeed of low weight.

Different mountings I’m pretty certain and that’s if you can find one!

Hi Steve, you mentioned noise in an earlier post if you remove internals to reduce weight that will allow more noise in the cabin not to mention a S/Steel exhaust which are always noiser than steel.

You are right, I did, but i'm beginning to like it :)

I've got the black TDI for sensible duties.

I wonder if these would work Steve? Sure they’d look stunning.

That looks like it fits very flush indeed Steve 👍 Better drill a hole to be able to insert a hook to pull it out again though - like the SE centres.
