Project Rescue!

Good evening, as is often the way i am back in an A2 that I propose to use when fuel hit £2 a Litre near me!

I rescued the 90 off here and I hope to address a few key points (mechanicals) and use for the next few weeks. I dare not keep it too long as I will get sucked into building a car like my old one and it’s not going to pass muster with the boss!

First things first is to give a full service, cambelt and work through the usual niggles.

I drove it 150 miles back to mine and was pleasantly surprised how comfortable it was.

The seats (platinum leather) are very worn so I have some TT seats which I plan to put in as most viable option for what is a low budget car to me.

The cambelt has not been done for sometime and new gates one with water pump now on, was nervous driving back. Justified:

Looks like you caught that just in time!

Great seeing you back in an a2 sir. Im pleased to say Tonka is fast approaching 210k and going strong though only on light duties now.

next jobs:

Wiper arm from Paul depronman
New driver headlight
Try and tidy body work as best I can
Driver door check strap
Maybe get some wheels to tidy but not essential
Strip interior and deep clean
Fit TT seats, may need to refurb / colour depending how close the TT Ivory is to platinum.
Source a second key and code in
Possibly new bonnet
Maybe install cruise

Compared to many projects this is tame but the intent is to save the car.

Good golly...do you know how long that had been on for?
Not had a belt for at least 6 years and at least 50k miles. Although no previous record of it ever being done but must have been done at some stage in its life. Thermostat was shot too.

Progress is getting the car to a sense where I can be comfortable using daily.

Headlight sorted thanks to @2work he sent a mint driver side unit and struggling to get passenger side looking as clean! Third world problems! A lot happier now headlight is secure and Tom did a great price to keep costs down! Helped by our ever faithful @A2Steve providing a couple of clips etc for cost of postage.
Bodywork better but never will be mint. Hopefully regular polishing and cleaning will help keep it looking presentable!
Decided to do a gearbox oil change, old stuff was grim but no water, hopefully cures 3rd gear crunch - if not 6 speed swap may be on the cards but would prefer not too as it’s a short term owner for me.
Returns nice mpg on my daily drive so it’s saving trips to the fuel pump which is what matters.
New wiper from @depronman what an absolute engineering marvel and service! Thanks Paul
Just trying to polish the scratch on the screen but suspect it’s too far gone. Will keep at it.

Needs an undertray too but will see what pops up.

Hope to try and get seats in soon as struggling to store them at present!

Wow the previous owner really got their value's worth out of that cambelt!
Do you know how many miles/years it had done?

There is normally a date embossed on the plain side

No history of it ever being done but I reckon it had done 6 years minimum as they definitely hadn’t done in their ownership.

A few little jobs tonight - suspected sticking rear caliper. Good news is that is free just missing the return spring clip. Another easy fix.

Gearbox getting better for oil change, only crunch once on a spirited change to third.

Noted inner driveshaft boot has split so J and R complete joint ordered as no idea how long it’s been gone and price wise same price as some boots! Used them before and found the products to be very good. Off side so hopefully can swap in situ although will probably take shaft out.

Plus 1 for j&r joints

How are you getting on with this Paul?

Good thing the stars never aligned for me to swing by yours on my way to London and relieve you of all your A2 spares eh? 😉

Currently the car has been loaned onto a family member as I sort one of their cars out!

It’s a nice drive to be honest, starting to look a little better and annoyingly the spares I have haven’t been what I needed. I have to resist another project as have far too many tasks on other cars!

Sadly my effort to polish the heavily scratched screen is not getting the result I optimistically hoped for so that will need doing at some stage.

Pending how fuel prices go I may sell on soon. (Again optimistic!)

Massive thanks are owed to @A2Steve for providing many parts needed to get the car as presentable as possible. He is an absolute gent and always been on point to help where he can. Reassuring that his underpinning ethos is to save as many cars as possible and not just break for profit!

Front cup holders now sorted
Front centre vents swapped over
New to car bonnet

When bonnet was put on I was never happy with the front alignment of light so Steve held a slam panel for me so plan to swap that over.

Every time I drive this car I really enjoy it. I am at risk of spending too much on (despite Steve being extremely fair on prices).

I feel that once slam panel is on I will assess whether I keep it and go to town or sell as a mechanically sorted car with a few cosmetic blemishes. It was never about making money and wanted to save it.

slam panel has made a world of difference, clear that while no obvious deviation in structure when lights are damaged likely slam panel is toast as a few threads have highlighted on here.

Changed fuel filter today. Old one was black and clearly not been done in a while (of ever as was original Audi). Luckily the filter screw didnt snap as wasn’t too tight. Car drives so much better and notably smoother. A service item I suspect often overlooked.

Car is a pleasure to drive now and if bodywork was better I would keep it. Still may fit TT seats, just need some brackets or fashion a safe way to install.

Got a few miles to do in it next week so will be interesting to see if mpg improves much.

Screen replaced this weekend and now likely time to move it on. I use it a lot but just have too many other cars and it’s getting daft. I will regret seeing it go if it sells but I suppose I don’t have to sell! (Well in my world but the good lady says otherwise)
