I see Sony has released online gaming for the PS2 at last.

But as with all things technology based it doesn't look easy.

OK, you get the game, and a headset to talk to other people, but the actuall connection over broadband.....

I think you need the network adapter, but then they say the ethernet cable can't directly link with a USB broadband modem.

Arghhhh-give me two bean tins and some string!. How does it all work?.

I haven't bought the stuff yet-didn't dare as I couldn't work out exactly what you did or didn't need.

I can't work out if you can just connect it straight to the broadband line, or if I still need to go through a modem. If I do nee to do the latter, mine is USB, so do I have to get a USB to ethernet adapter, or network my PC. If I have to network the PC, that is upstairs and the playstation is downstairs.

See what I mean!!!!. Arghh!. I'll look around the web sites as there some turorials out there.

ok,

if you have a usb modem (i hate bt!) then you need to 1. network your computer and PS2 - run ethernet cable from computer to PS2 and use software to share connection - drawback are that you need to have computer on to use PS2 online and if you have an old pc you might need to buy ethernet card

or 2. buy a router/switch thing that works with your usb modem - you then plug your computer and PS2 and anything else you want to network into router box - cool tip - some of these are also WI-FI enabled - wireless
-- the positive side of this is you dont have to have your computer on to use PS2 online as the box is sharing connection

or 3. buy a combo modem/router box thing - this has a modem to connect to internet and 4 or 5 ethernet ports to connect computers, PS2, printers etc...
again, you can get these things with built in wireless networking... You can then use your old BT modem as a paperweight... - note - some service providers insist you only use their modems... make sure the modem you buy is certified for your provider...

if you do plan 2 or 3 with wireless enabled boxes then you can also connect your PS2 wirelessly to internet. - you just need to buy a little wireless thing for your PS2 - they cost about $40 usa dollars...

so, some things to think about...

buying a router with wireless powers give you flexability to get more computers/laptops and not worry about running cables...

hope this helps....

i would recommend getting at the very least a router/.switch box that works with your usb modem and if you have an extra 20 or 40 quid go for wireless features even if you wont use it right away... these boxes usually come with a print server too! make sure the ethernet switch is 10/100mb so you can get faster data transfers if you have nice computers....

It's the cable running thing that worries me-PC upstairs, PS2 downstairs. Probably cheaper to just buy a new modem for the PS2 and have done with it.

Thanks for the info though. And do you think many PS2 owners will be going down this route with so much to consider?. Me thinks not!.

i think the PS2 kit includes a dial-up modem - like a 56k modem...

so you can dabble with that... of course a dast broadband connection is nicer!

you can probably get a modem with a 4-port ethernet router for the same price if a basic modem these days...

good luck!
