Purchase advice needed

Good Morning Everyone!
I am here for a piece of advice. I fell in love with the A2 model and looking to purchase one. Being in London and due to ULEZ charge I am left with but one option - 1.4 petrol – These are going up slightly as I think sellers have realised Diesel is less desirable due to pollution charges in big cities. For my budget (up to £2000) it is very hard to find something with less than 80k and nice condition. With this price range I could get an 2007-2010 – Mercedes a150 – a160 which has similar size and economy but half the mileage. This would not be my first choice but given the scarcity of A2’s available at the moment I might have no other choice – I am not interested in a project car – no funds nor time for this. I would like a good, reliable car which is cost effective to keep. What are the things I should be aware of when buying 1.4 petrol A2 with approx.. 80k on the clock? What are the service costs? And maybe not the most popular question but is Merc a viable option? – I am talking the second gen as the first one was a disaster. I will be using it for short trips outside the city with my wife and probably will not exceed 6k miles in a year. Many thanks for all the advice and my apologies if I rub some the wrong way.
Mike

The console is easily sorted, correct radio and better climate control unit - you see early hard touch climate units from time to time with an asking price of around £100, and the radios are really easy to pick up. Yes, there's a slight dent in the passenger door, but for that price I'd put up with it. The wheels look good, I would have thought it worth going to view.
Good to know these can be sourced - I might give it a shot.

Ok guys - I will let you know how did it go this weekend - I am seeing it tomorrow - I might have ask some of your expert opinions about this car. Have a great rest of a day!

Here's a Gumtree listing for an A2 in Dartford:

If you're going on your bike it might be worth viewing both. This one definitely looks tidier inside, and has the very sought-after rear cup holders as an unexpected bonus!

I have a sweet little Y reg, 2001 1.4 SE @ 56k. I never have an issue with ULEZ when driving in central London. Check any registration at: https://tfl.gov.uk/modes/driving/ultra-low-emission-zone I live in Surrey, just south of London and highly recommend Wheelbase in Hersham https://www.wheelbase.uk.com The last full service cost £236.00 including fluids and VAT. Hope you find something suitable, but you are right, good 1.4s are very few and far between and appreciating.

Hi All
I have also just joined and am also looking for an A2, so reading this thread with interest.

Aiming high for open sky plus aircon (until reality may kick in) so my question is: If I got the open sky without aircon will I regret it on a warm rainy day? I live in West Yorkshire so many ‘warm’ days also include rain...

There may well be a Clean Air Zone coming to Leeds (inside the ring road) which would mean I would have to pay to get in to work with a diesel so I am limiting my choice to petrol.

NB I also noted the red A2 in Malton (interior covered in bike oil) but my wife seems to think fitting new interior would bump the price up past a car with nice interior in place.

Any advice ?

Many thanks

Hello and welcome to the club. As previously mentioned I wouldn't discount it as interiors are usually not that expensive from member sales. It may be the respray to repair the lacquer peel which could be expensive.

Hello and welcome to the forum :) What that owner in Malton did with that Platinum (light grey) interior feels somewhat sacrilegious to me! Platinum and Twist (beige) are difficult colours to keep clean. So any second-hand replacement will likely need a good going-over as well, and may not clean up as far as you'd like. They are also comparatively rare compared to the more common black interior. You may get lucky with someone on here replacing Platinum cloth seats in good condition with leather seats. The good news is that second-hand cloth seats in general really aren't that expensive, as they're the ones people are trying to upgrade from. Good luck in your search anyway :)

This one is slightly higher mileage than you are after, but has a new MOT (haven't looked at the MOT history) and not too far from London

Looks fairly tidy apart from a water stain on the back seat and a truly hideous radio (replacement A2 ones are fairly easy to come by)
Ah what a disappointment this was. It’s a project not a car you can enjoy right away. Something wrong with front passenger door. Creeks when opening with some resistance probably related to the damage along this side. My wife refused to get inside it was so disgusting. No service history. However it’s remarkable how well the body withstand the pass of time.

The door creek is very common(sounds bad but it’s nowt) it’s easily solved it’s the stay bar Depronman on here refurbs and sells them straight swap you send him old one ..inside it’s again surprising with a deep wet valet if they are not ripped it can up like new £60 would cover that ..interiors are quality tough fabrics you would be amazed how filthy grimy seats will turn out nice ..
I’ve just looked at old add for that car that interior is fine ...? read above ..that’s the interior and door creek done for £100 ?

Did you spot this one @seemehow ?
Great spec, mileage and condition, must be a members car, or has been.
Beautiful example, definitely well looked after. Strange to see a SE model without the gear chrome ring and sport seats without lumbar adjustment...
Can't go wrong at the price. Shame the reg number has been removed.
