PYXi the Poorly FSi: Worth Saving?

Are you doing all this more or less live, or has much work shown now been done many days ago? Just curious as I know how much time editing and uploading takes. Very Interesting thread, keep it coming.

I did the cleaning last Sunday afternoon: I guess was about four hours from getting the washer / jacks out of the garage to having the car done and back on the ground. This was purely the jet-wash stage, so nothing other than dirt-removal.

The gear-shifting was yesterday as was a great big garage tidy as it was wrecked from my efforts in re-commissioning the Forester S Turbo the week before.

PYXi's now in the garage so weather is no issue and I can just pick off the jobs as I fancy. Whilst technically there's no rush to crack on (I don't need the car as have others that are taxed and on the road), I do like to keep up some sort of momentum otherwise you lose that initial enthusiasm. Once a project stalls it's very hard to fire yourself back up again.

As for editing and so on, I'm shooting on a compact camera (Lumix DMC-TZ100) and generally just leaving it in smart auto mode. I'm using the lowest res, smallest size and it's filing the pics as JPEG's. All I'm doing is picking out the shots that are appropriate, cutting them to 1/4 size and popping them in a sub-file labelled 'Small'. It's all pretty quick and I'm only using the Edit function in Paint as it opens so fast.

Overall, it's very painless. I do have a DSLR (an old D200) which never gets moved out of RAW, but it's all a bit clunky for this sort of thing. Anyway, I've no idea how it works :D .

The little Lumix is fab though: a really good camera, wide range of talents and bought for a trip to Canada in 2016. Was about £500 I think, but some of the Canada shots made it worth it (plus, I always have it with me). I literally nearly trod on the frog: he was just near the edge of a path, very small and from a human height, not that interesting. I did my best with him anyway and simply couldn't believe it when the picture was brought up on my brother's huge TV. Went all the way to Toronto (only commercial flight I've ever been on), and my best picture was a one of a frog that I could probably have found 8000 miles closer to home ... I should probably say it was nice to see my brother though ? BTW, on a big screen you can see the veins in the wing of that tiny fly that's stuck to the frog's nose. Modern sensors are just incredible.

Talking of 'thread production' I'm utterly appalled at my posts when I go back and re-read them. Spelling, missing words, words and phrases repeated a line or two down. I run back and forth these threads, clearing up my own mess. I think I'm so keen to get each post shoved up it's only later I realise what a shoddy job I've done and tidy up after myself.

Therefore, if you spot (another) calamity, I'll probably be back in a while to edit it away. Hopefully

I know what you mean about editing stuff all the time, it often takes several goes for me before I don't have anything I want to change after hitting the 'Post' button. I have to say that your posts always read really well to me Barry, and with an enjoyable humour. I do like following your A2 adventures and I'm glad you're finding them rewarding enough to want to write about.

I wholeheartedly agree...@Rusty911 threads are among the few that I follow!

I agree; they're great reads.
I don't know about the rest of your followers, but I would also be interested in seeing what's happened to the TT that arrived chez Rusty911 a couple of weeks ago (and the Forester that was sneaked in today with us having no prior knowledge). Despite their non A2ness, a picture or two and a few lines about the other projects wouldn't go amiss.

Well thank you Gentlemen, I'm humbled by your support, I really am.

TBH, although we're on an A2 forum (clearly) I was a bit worried me smearing my exploits all over the show might be (in my Grandmother's words) 'a bit much.' It's a pleasure to work on these cars and to post up any story that might result.

As for the other members of the Rusty fleet, well, perhaps I'll sneak in a little thread into the Relaxation Room. I don't think anyone will notice if we hang out and talk about non-A2 vehicular matters ? There's always plenty going on at Rusty Towers and Rusty Workshops (I so wish I'd called it that).

Doh: could almost have been made for the job! I shall rock up with the Rusty fleet over there in due course.
I’ll rock up with tales of untold joy that the other vehicle in our household brings me ?

Just a quick barely-update: did a scan a little earlier. A peruse of my 'to do' list will show charging light up, suspect alternator output.

Naturally this has meant that the car has suffered any number of 'low voltage' issues across a raft of modules. Hopefully with the alternator replaced or repaired many of these will disappear.

Therefore I think straight to the top of the pile of jobs goes that alternator: if I can shift the bolts I'll get him off and research how to test. Not much point trying to deal with diagnostics if you have to start wondering if low voltage is playing a part in your problems.

Even so, I did see a wide range of engine-related codes to get stuck into in due course. I'm hoping to get as many of these as possible sorted before trying the Pro-Boost as I don't want to mask underlying issues.

More in the week no doubt.

Barry, I'm confused by the selection of A2s that arrived (was it two or three almost at once) at your place and where you're at with them - Can you do a "state of play" update? What happened to this one for example?

Hello all, sorry for the relative radio silence recently: busy with other things.

Cobalt TDi: gradually being improved, has done 4K miles with me now, including 480 miles from East Sussex to North Wales and back yesterday, literally before lunch (couldn't sleep so left home at 04:30). Keep looking for a MYP for it at sensible price. MOT due early Jan.

PYXi: not been touched but do intend still to do a resto so I can back-to-back against the TDi. The latter is very good on the longer runs, but I suspect PXYi will be more suited to the local stuff (and more fun generally). Much will depend on where I head with my big towcar: I've just bought an 09 Discovery 3 (a project, naturally). If that stays, TDi will likely win as I'd not want to be using a Disco 3 as a regular solo long distance car. If I go for something slightly lighter (Santa Fe?) then the FSi has more of a chance as I'd probably use a Santa Fe (etc) as an actual car a bit more.

The Yorkshire Car: just sold it as had a fortnight of MOT left and it had too many issues to be viable as a 160K, little history car. I ended up with a refund plus my day-out money (fuel and a couple of sandwiches). New owner contemplating EV conversion which would be a good fit as it had nice bodywork and very, very good interior / soft-touch.

Lots of other things happening as well: Austin Project coming on, the above mentioned Disco 3, boat swap poss coming up, workshop LED conversion etc etc, so PXYi got a way to go to claw back up the list!

Something I have seen on your nonA2 list is a smart roadster. How is it ?

In short: brilliant! I think in the Coupe form it's design genius. To reach those tiny dimensions and still get actual full sized humans inside, whilst retaining a modern 2/3 to 1/3 metal / glass side profile is brilliant. Most small cars end up with proportionally large glass-houses which never looks right.

Handles superbly, does a genuine 55-60mpg and mines been mapped to around 110bhp which is more than enough.

Mine currently has a slightly poorly SAM unit, so is out of action (plus I've run out of space so it's being stored anyway). I think the only thing I would request if they did a new one would be a smaller steering wheel coupled with much, much more steering feel: there's almost none.

But that aside, yes, I really rate it.

If you need your SAM looking at more than happy to check it out and repair if we can
