Radio 4 program on switching to electric cars

Early Leaf batteries are reknowned for degradation. It might make sense to upgrade to better battery technology and greater capacity:

Just what I was going say.

Early Japan-built Leafs had comparatively simple battery tech reflective of development from 1.25 decades ago and not a great guide to how fully managed batteries will perform in the future.

Of course when that future arrives the current crop of batteries will also be obsolete.

Against that, personal P.C. sales levelled off when people realised that irrespective of later developments, their existing P.C. did all they needed. Ergo, whether we have a 100 or 1000 mile range is completely irrelevant to my Mum who will only drive max 25 miles each way anyway. E.g. the current crop is already beyond her needs.

Even now, the Leaf doesn't have active battery management.

I want a Twizy with spikes for the ice track... I can't easily go EV due to my commute being 400km one way. Still, there was a post yesterday from a friend who took his Model 3 from Helsinki to Akaslompolo. 2 Charges on the way: once about an hour north of Lahti and another out by Oulu somewhere, and that's all that was needed. I can dig out the details if you want. It's around 970kms one way and 12 hours of driving.
