Radio reception issues [SOLVED]

thanks Andy, very helpful. As far as I can see, I have potentially two problems with reception apart from the missing wire:

1) The diversity unit/photo that you have is in reference to the connectors that I can see behind (top of my photo) the empty box that I thought was for a CD changer right? I can only assume that if this is the case then any PCB attached must be ruined by the water? Does this form part of a connection to the aerial in the rear window, and if so then I would need to change this to restore reception?
2) If the flooding of (1) not relevant, then that leaves me with a) coax connections to rear window being broken or b) the actual filament in the window being broken, which I can check by running rear window demist and seeing if it works, as this forms part of the aerial?

Hope I have that right.
Hi,

It seems the connector is not missing, just being black with a black background I missed it on initial inspection.

Did you read the link I posted in post 23 above? Read that and you will know almost as much as I do! If you google "a2oc diversity unit" you will find more links to information. Don't know why but I imagine the diversity unit is a junction box for the aerials cables and acts a clever router.

Forget the empty box, nearly everybody has an empty box it was was only filled if the original owner opted for the rarely seen early audio based navigation system. I think it was a cd unit to receive the navigation map disc for the system. There was a string of posts once about the variety of items people now store in there, I have a towing strap!

Good luck.

Andy

Yes, sorry, poor lighting/cameraman - a check has revealed that it is there and plugged in

yes, have read attentively! I have managed to get the diversity unit out - see photo below - and although I haven't managed to actually open it (I seem not to have a torx small enough - think it's T8), it was still damp, so definitely worth trying to dry it out. The black terminal that you thought was missing is actually very "green", so as soon as I can open it up, will give it a clean.

glad you cleared that up!

Looking at picture i'd suspect that positive power pin in 2 wire connector in unit might be corroded through or has disintegrated solder joint. Might have some component with corrosion too.
Where green stuff is, there's places to fix. Vodka and soldering iron will fix that, or new unit. Sometimes vodka and toothbrush is enough.
Before cleaning it note (or take picture) all the places where green is.
But inspect connector itself too and clean it with vodka or some specific connector cleaner.

Looking at Elsawin, it would appear that the aerials (four I think) are separate from the heater element
Looking at glass, at least 2 FM ones near third brake light are connected to heater, 2 upper with blue wires look separate, but dont remember if they were for FM too. And then there is 5-th separate on lower left for whatever reason. (Recently removed one form 1.6 tailgate to get my 1.2 equipped with correct spoiler, atm has normal A2 version.)

Yes it does look bad, it MAY clean up as in post #38, but i suspect the wiring tracts have been eaten rendering it pretty useless unless you want to bridge all the damage. Probably better just replacing the unit. Would still go back OEM with the Symphony.

That looks like it needs replacing, even for me. Especially since there seems to be black smoke too, probably something blew up.
I might even try to do it for fun (or sunday challenge) if it was mine and i'd listen to radio, but realistically it would need donor board to repair. And then it's already no brainer to use the donor unit as replacement...

yep, not even going to waste any time on it. will source one off ebay or wherever...suggestions welcome.

...and I would add @sciroccorrado, the picture I posted was from a selling thread of his last Autumn, he might still have it, it did not appear to sell in the thread. If no joy initially post an ad in wanted on here.

Andy

Edit. Lots on eBay.

Ok, thanks @sciroccorrado , have received the unit and installed. Sadly have just noticed that the black plug below is really knackered too, along with the fact that one of the wires into it seems to be broken so need to replace this plug. Does anyone know the part number or where I can source a new one? Thanks all.

You can just about make out the part number for the plug in the picture. Use that and google it or try Audi either local dealer or Crewe Audi on here. Alternatively see if you can get the plug and 6 inch tails from one of our recyclers.

yes, tried just that, but nothing is coming up. Will have another go at reading it...need a magnifying glass...old eyes not up to it. Either that or a Lilliputian.
