Rapidly deteriorating electrics

Hi, I have a friend with an A2 that has several electrical faults.
Firstly the fob stopped locking the car so she has to use the key.
Then the windows stopped working along with the sunroof.
Now the heating fan has stopped working.
Whilst driving you can sometimes hear a clunk as though the doors are trying to lock or unlock.

I have checked the fuses near the drivers knee but they are all OK.
Has anyone got any ideas? I assume there must be other fuses lurking some where but where? It almost sounds like a connector has come loose somewhere as there are so many unrelated problems but where?

Many thanks in advance
Iain

Sounds like the classic symptoms of a failing central convenience ECU as all the parts you mention are controlled by it.

It's the little black box in the passenger footwell, and costs about £200 to replace and recode.

Cheers,

Mike

Am I the only one who suspects that the electronics on these cars can be a bit 'flaky'?

My drivers window went through a period if refusing to one-touch open and close this morning. Went into the bank, came back and it was as right as rain. Or the door mirror adjuster that only works sometimes. Or the illumination of the top 3 symbols on the light switch that sometimes comes on and sometimes doesn't......

Never mind the boot light!

Never had trouble with mine to be honest. Had a few niggles with the previous A2, especially windows automatically going down when operating the power steering!

Touch wood, Tank is very well behaved in the electrics department.

Cheers,

Mike

As Skipton says its the Komfort Electronique module - £324 all in to replace at an Audi dealer....and yes I would agree that the electrics are a little flaky - my Engine managment light and EPC light regularly come on and off with no apparent effect on the driving or performance....

When I read posts like this I feel the little old lady did us a good deed by writing off our A2!

When i get to 600 I will "retire"

So negative Ian - you'll be wishing you had the A2 when your new VW starts rusting and the roof starts sticking!

Like most modern cars, there are a huge amount of electrics housed in there these days and occasionally something may go wrong.

Out of nearly 2000 active members, we have reports of maybe 10-15 dodgy CC ECUs which isn't a bad ratio. When you take the other plus points of the car into account, the A2 is an great all-round package.

Cheers,

Mike

My brother had a successions of BMWs until he got one with no end of trouble with the ECU. Even though it was looked at under the warranty he got fed up with the dissruption of taking it to the dealer for a day at a time on numerous ocassions. And he thought he was paying for a quality car.

Mind you I'm having no end of problems with my new ADSL router/modem. Supplier reluctant to replace it and instead keeps wanting me to try yet another version of the firmware (internal software). I've lost hours, no days, over it.

I've been in IT all my life (too many years to own up to!) and it dismays me that software development is seen predominately as a creative art rather than an engineering discipline. I've not worked on safety critical systems like railway signalling or aircraft control systems but I believe (hope!) they are more robust. But with embedded systems moving into numerous devices I wonder if there is sufficient supply of skilled (and expensive) software engineers and desire to employ them and fund robust development*. Just look at the active driving and parking systems that some vehicle manufacturers are now demonstrating. [*most will probably go off-shore to India, Russia and eastern block countries]

Must stop ranting!

Mike

Only joking, we ran them for four years with only one minor problem so cannot complain.

If they had still been making them we would have bought another.

Electrical System

Same problem I have a TDi, done some milage 140,000 - but the electrical system has gone into melt down, started with the windows, then the boot, interior lights and now the indicators are playing up. In additioon to this the ABS and traction lights come on now and agin or stay on? Could this be the ECU - I have the opportuinty of getting a 2nd hand one, could I retro fit or would the Audi dealership have to re-set?

A full Vagcom check will be your definitive answer, but it sounds like your central convenience unit may be partially to blame.

Check out some of the other posts using the search facility to see if the symptoms are similar. One of our members with the necessary kit may be able to offer you a Vagcom diagnosis if you live close by or wish to attend a social.

Cheers,

Darren
