Has anyone suffered from a rattle/rumbling noise which seems to come from under the gear lever? The sound, whilst a bit intermittent, is especially noticable at low speeds in 1st, 2nd and reverse. Having said that it can still be heard in other gears at higher speeds.

The noise does not seem to be trim related, there are no vibrations through the gear lever and it can't be heard outside the cabin. It sounds like a mechanical noise.

Does anyone have any idea what it is? The car is out of warranty and the dealer wants to charge an extortionate rate just to investigate.

Any help will be gratefully received.

Hi,

Yes, I`m having then same rattle/rumble noise from under the gear level. This is especially noticable when it is cold outside and it weakens when the car is getting warmer. It can be very loud at times, specially around and above 2200 rpms.
My local Audi dealer looked at the problem for three hours but could not find anything wrong unfortunately.

Please inform us if you find something.

Thanks,

I had the same problem whilst my 1.4 petrol 2001 model was still under warranty. The first time it went in the noise issue was sorted but after about 50 miles the rattling came back. The second visit was more successful. After about 5000 miles still no noise !!! They explained that it was due to the gear lever and all it needed was a cable tie to keep it tight (?) All a bit strange but hey the annoying rattle is no more so I'm happy !!

Thanks for the suggestions.

Armed with them I went to Bristol Audi rather than my local one in Bath, their verdict was that the noise wasn't the driveshafts but that it could be the gearbox needing a cable tie.

Apparently some boxes are rod operated and some are cable and if it is cable operated it might need to be tightened. The cost for this would be about £37 + vat.

If it isn't this they would need to investigate which could be up to £150 + vat.

As it stands I will probably leave it until it needs a service later next year.

Any other suggestions gratefully received.............
