RDS-TMC tomtom receiver

A waste of money - don't do it, at least for use in the UK.

These are the most positive of the negative reviews I've found so far:

I bought the TomTom 720 and had considered waiting for the 720T instead, until I found out about just how crap the RDS-TMC reception is in the UK. Have opted to use the TomTom Traffic system via my Sony Ericsson w810i. Works a treat and has saved me hours of traffic queuing time in its first month of use.

re. "Any idea how much phone network charge for data usage?"

No bill as yet and I'll be paying via a relative's staff account so no idea what retail price is. Should be minimal though if you choose to do traffic updates manually rather than setting the TomTom to auto updates. The main cost is the annual TomTom subscription fee (£32?). Bought the 720 online so more than paid for the Traffic subscription by the price saving. Got mine from http://handtec.co.uk/

I use my Nokia on O2 with my TomTom One and the costs are quite small for the GPRS used. From Maidstone to Manchester the other week, cost me about 12p for the traffic updates. You can choose how often to update the traffic, I've got mine set to every 15 mins & it's always warned me a re-routed in plenty of time.

I got a new phone and it works quite well with the traffic updates but the tomtom is having a bluetooth hardware problem when calling. Contacted tomtom and they want me to return the 720 so i'm thinking of going for the 720T which is now the same price as when I purchased it.

So I can test it now :)

The RDS-TMC traffic info is updated much less regularly than that via the TomTom Traffic system so, if you get a cash refund, I still reckon you'd be better off buying another 720 at its new lower price and using what you save on a couple of year's subscription to TomTom Traffic.

I was looking at the 720 and yeah I can get one for £230 and thats a saving of £50 from what I paid :)
