re: Eibach springs for A2

Hi,

short version: If you have an FSI or TDI, feel free to use the Eibach 6Y spring sets (E7910-140).

Longer version:
Some of you, I know, follow the German forum. There's an awful lot going on there at the moment in terms of improvements and pushes to bring the A2 forward. Extended CANBus readers, secondary DIS displays... One issue has been suspension, with Koni's awful FSD consistency meaning the B4 has replaced them as the "comfort" damper of choice.
Spring selection is another massive issue, with Spidan, original, Bilstein B3s, FK, KW, ST, Weitec, ABT and Eibach all either having or have had springs for the A2.
With good damping, decent springs start to get really important. The larger aim has been to avoid the famous "pooping elk" look, where the rear of the car sits lower than the front. My own car is afflicted by this. There are several variations on resolution, including the larger spring seats (+7-10mm). The biggest opportunity, though, is the Eibach kit from the Fabia.

Eibach's Fabia Pro-Kit is built for Fabias with a front axle max. weight which is remarkably similar to the TDI and FSI front axle max weights. It is significantly higher (60kg) than the standard petrol A2. Rear axle max weights work with all "normal" A2s; not 100% sure on the 1.2.

What this means in practice? Eibach have been very reasonable and have sent the spring rate information of the A2 and Fabia springs, confirming that there is no difference aside from a 15mm longer length. This, along with the supplied "Unbedenklichkeitsbescheinigung" means that these are legally usable in Germany and other countries which require the German paperwork (like Finland).

The paperwork is in this post; you'll need to be a registered user to view / download it.

Feedback from users is very positive, especially in combination with Bilstein B6 or B8s (and as it's >20mm drop, it should be B8s!). Difference between a B6 and a B8 is nothing on the damping and everything on the length.

I will be installing these - if they arrive on time - in my own car on Thursday or Friday. Should be very interesting indeed with the new ARBs and B8s.

Very nice combo bret. I have Eibach Prokit springs and Bilstein B8 dampers in my A2 1.4 petrol. Regarding to springs and dampers in standard design, i think this is the best combo for the A2 - even with the longer rear springs from the skoda. Better than such standard components is just a full adjustible coilover, like KW V3 with full adjustibable rebound and pressure stage, and if needed customized springs, but its 2-3times pricier.

To refine Eibach and Bilstein, the H&R ARB kit is the next logical step. You will love it!

Next steps of evolution would be SuperPro bushings for all possible places.

This is great, thank you for sharing this with us guys.

So just to confirm could all four springs from the Fabia 6Y eibach kit be used on the A2 TDi?

What is the likely drop in ride height to be? Can I assume that because the Eibach kit lowers a fabia by 30 mm and the springs are 15mm longer than the ones for the A2 that it would effectively lower an A2 by 15 mm over standard?

Following facts for the FRONT AXIS:

The Fabia Kit comes with a front spring, which is listed in the TÜV report for original Eibach Audi A2 Prokit for heavy A2s. The part no of this spring is EW 7910001 VA , approved UP TO 830kg max. axial load. "UP TO" means, that this front spring can be installed on EVERY Audi A2 (except 1.2TDI), because A2s do never have more than 830kg axial load at the front axis.

BUT: Because it its a "strong" front spring, it just lowers heavy Audi A2s with heavy engines and maybe gearboxes the way you might expect, like most 1.4TDI and 1.6FSI.

There is also a front spring for light A2s, such as 1.4 or maybe some very light 1.4TDI with less equipment on board. The part no of this spring ist 11-15-002-01-VA, approved UP TO 770kg max. axial load and its also listed in the TÜV report.
The problem is: There is no know Eibach Prokit for other cars, that has this spring for light cars inside. Or in other words: This spring is discontinued and can only be ordered as an individual item or with a collective order of many peaces.

Remember: In the past, Eibach sold two orginal Eibach Prokit versions für the Audi A2. One for light cars up to max. 770kg front axial load , one version for heavy cars up to max. 830kg front axial load. Both kits came with the same REAR spring. The number is: 11-15-002-01-HA . Lets take a look at the rear spring:

Following facts for the REAR AXIS:

There is only ONE rear spring listed in the TÜV report. The part no of this spring is 11-15-002-01-HA , and its approved up to max. 780kg rear axial load. This means: Its made for all A2s (expect 1.2TDI), but this spring is also discontinued. But there a other solutions:

Lets take a look at the Fabia kit:

This kit comes with the front spring EW 7910001 VA (see above), and with the rear spring 11-79-001-01-HA. This rear spring has the same rate like the original one from the A2 kit, but it is 15mm longer.

So yes, you can install the Fabia Kit without any problems on alle A2 1.4TDI and 1.6FSI.
But remember: The result will just be satisfying, if the A2 is heavy (best result with 830kg front axial load).

Also yes, you can also install this fabia kit to the Audi A2 1.4 or any other light A2 (except 1.2TDI), but the optical result might be not satisfying at the front axis.

Thanks so much both. I have been holding off lowering my TDi as all kits currently available in the UK specifically for the A2 all lower the car too much for my taste. Really pleased that this has come to light as I can now have the brand I want at the height I desire. Fantastic :D

I bought the H&R progressive springs a couple of years ago with the cheap orange konis, but was put off using them after reading more about them.
I bought spidan instead for lighter petrol spec for my TDI with the konis. Happy with the springs height and stiffness(with some weight in the back at least), though find the orange Konis a bit harsh on rough surfaces and need more rebound for my liking. I think H&R have moved away from the original progressive design ? Half of the coils could be compressed by hand, therefore useless on compression, but may have an advantage on rebound?
I can find the part codes if required. 1.4 petrol front springs for FSI/TDI give lowering and comfort but a bit more likely to bottom out on bumpy rural A roads; good combination with 'raising' shocks like FSD's I guess.

Thanks, it's the comfort angle I'm chasing, brett_kivi thread op seems to cover that most completely. Some stiffness would do not be required. This will be big purchase, well up to the purchase price of the car! So want to get it right. Thanks again for your input.

Just waiting on the B4 rear dampers to be delivered and then this is a job I'll be doing on Tank in the next week or so. I have B8s up front with Weitec -30 springs and have ordered a pair of B4s for the rear with a pair of Bilstein's B3 springs (gone for the re-inforced 147700 version, as opposed to the 'normal' 147717 ones).

Just compared the springs which arrived today to the Weitec 21037 ones which I only had fitted for a few weeks around 5 years ago (before I went back to standard Audi springs) and they're way longer, but of thinner steel and are more compliant, at least in the first part of compression.

I'll be interested to see how Tank sits with the new rear suspension. I hope it'll be just the ticket to go with the new comfy boots he has on at the back now.

Here's a couple of photos of the springs - Weitec in yellow and Bilstein in black. There's around 55mm between them from rough measurements:

I take it Tank has 205/55R16 all round? How are they doing? Which wheels are they on(curious to know the offset)?
I've not long fitted new B4's on the rear using the original springs and am awaiting the B4's for the front (ordered 6 weeks ago).
Finished the nursery? How's progress?

Looking forward to hearing what you think. Still have this planned, going to be sooner rather than later. Getting rather fed up with the harshness, getting to be a deciding factor now.

I still have the 195/55 R16 on the front at the moment. Rears are great - pretty silent and although they do rub when going over bumps or cornering hard, I hope this will be cured with new suspension - the kit that's on at present is 12 years old - the Koni FSDs which I was among the first to adopt in the UK. To say they're shot would be an understatement.

The 205/55 are on Mk1 TT 5 spoke alloys so have an offset of 31mm, as opposed to standard A2 wheels with 35mm offset. However, as the TT rim width is 7J as opposed to 6J on the SE wheel. This supposedly gives 9mm less inner clearance and the wheel also extends 17mm more, which is here you get the nice arch-filling look from.

I got lucky with the B4 rears - a pair of them from Demon Tweeks for £36!! Yes, £18 per damper!!

Nursery is done and progress - cooking nicely, with around 13 weeks still to go.

Can anyone tell me the price differential between having the four shocks and springs replaced with the Bilstein B4 B3 combination as opposed to replacing with original Audi parts?
I would like to do the best by the car but being retired now money is tight and the car only goes out a couple of times a week.

Thanks for that. Great price on the rear B4's, I got the same deal (after a long delay, cancellation and reorder). They're messing about my B4 fronts order too.(£60 pair)
Good to hear the bun is coming along well, best of luck to the baker. :)

Was that also with Demon Tweeks Outlet? I've just had to raise a request on Ebay as they're now overdue, so I hope it won't be 6 weeks!!! Don't think the FSDs will last that long.
