Re-mapped TDI 90 on 15 inch wheels?

Doing it again in 4th on the way home from work tonight. Pulled the car over and lifted the bonnet, no smell whatsoever.

Doesn’t do it until revs hit around 2000 when the boost kicks in and doesn’t seem to to do once the clutch has warmed up a bit.

Will be fitting the 17s tonight just to rule that out and then going back to the garage tomorrow

I can't help thinking the 17s will make it worse as they'll likely be heavier. Best of luck, it's looking like a clutch issue.

Wow, well well well

just got back from the test drive after fitting the 17s back on. All signs of clutch slip have gone away.

Even from low down revs in 5th and foot to the floor acceleration there was no clutch slip.

The 15 inch wheels must have been spinning under hard acceleration.

I guess despite the mileage this little 90 is very healthy.

I can honestly say I didn’t expect that result

What amazes me was why didn’t the taction control come on and back the acceleration off?

I did 8 passes of the same road to testit with the 17s and didn’t slip once.

The traction control should have come on I’m really confused with this one to be honest, really very odd. Happy for you if it isn’t the clutch however

Now I think about it, I had this weird clutch slip that mysteriously vanished 2 winters ago on the wife’s Seat Alhambra TDI 115, but only in really cold weather on the motorway in 4th as the turbo boost cut in. And only when the engine was cold...by chance I changed to winter tyres and steel wheels of the same rolling radius at that point then in the spring the alloy wheels got new summer tyres and it never happened again, despite REALLY TRYING to provoke it. Was definitely like clutch slip and not high-speed wheelspin on ice! That car has done a further 10,000 of hard spanking (now at 210,000 no mercy) and not another peep from the clutch.
Glad it looks ok, would be interested to know if you ruled out the tyres slipping on the rims with chalk?

What make of tyres ? Are they newly fitted ?
Does indeed sound like tyre slip on rims. If both are doing it then traction control would not kick in

The tyres look to be almost new but I didn’t have them fitted so do not know when they were.

For curiosity I should have chalked the tyres but I just wanted to fit the 17s back ASAP because I didn’t have the issue prior to firing them

I’ve fitted lots of tyres over the years and some are really easy to get on the rim eg Pirelli are really soft and you can almost get them on with your hands were as others are really tight
So different tyre makes will grip the rims tighter or looser

So much for my idea. Great news though why didn't TCS notice?
I have no idea, as suggested above, the tyres may have been slipping on the rim, but whilst I’m not dismissing it, I struggle to see how a little 1.4 diesel has enough power to make tyres slip.

From what I've noticed A2 traction control doesn't really get upset as long as acceleration registered is within "norm" by which it assumes it is accelerating rather than slipping - I've had it in the last years snow, both wheels spinning and putting foot down fairly quickly but not too quickly results in me doing 40mph in parking lot in 2nd while near still.

It does panic if it accelerated quicker than it expects or front wheel don't spin at same rate it seems - i guess if you'd weld the diff you could do reverse doughnuts with the traction control system not batting an eye.

Interested in this thread. Could it be that there are no wheel speed sensors on the rear wheels? Hence if the fronts are spinning equally the ECU doesn't engage TCS. Only if there is differential rotation in the front driving wheels is TCS engaged. That would mean that with the smaller wheels you are breaking traction in 4th gear.....that must be a great remap! Somehow I feel the tyre slipping on the rim unlikely. One thing I have noticed with winter tyres is that although the ultimate grip in cold weather may be better, they start letting go much earlier and in a much more progressive manner. Can't remember if you mentioned your 15's had winter tyres on or not?

From memory rear has ABS sensors - but probably used for braking only, also being on separate axle likely independent of front so it has 2 sets of data feeds one for front and one for rear. It would make sense for rear to not be registering acceleration as those wheels are only for braking/free rolling and A2 isn't that high performance for it needing to be taken into account.

Could be alignment as well - mine is pretty shait now - had wheel spin in third going 50 on a wet day with sport wheels :D engine does feel strong but camber being that off is pretty wonky, getting new tires and alignment sometime soon though.

Funnily my Mum's TDI imported from germany had ABS completely wiped - no idea how that bloody works but it has air in place of ABS pump/controls like it was never there. It also doesn't have ABS at all as per the air where ABS should be, so someone could've been clever and deleted it as seen such bodge before.
