Rear axle alignment

Just putting my back axle back on and I notice there is a small amount of adjustment on the two axle to chassis brackets. How do I ensure this is aligned correctly on 're assembly? I've done a few searches and drawn a blank. On line manual doesn't even mention it.
Cheers
Dave

Where is it that you're seeing the possibility for adjustment? The workshop manual doesn't refer to any adjustment procedure, nor does there look to be any from the parts catalogue.

Didn't @philward bump up against this as well when he did his? From that diagram it can only be that the size of the holes in the brackets is larger than the shank of the bolts (item 10 in the diagram) going through them to fasten to the underside of the car. Having not marked the bracket locations before removal, the only way to get it absolutely correct now would be a Hunter or similar optical alignment rig at a tyre specialist.

I didn't mark but I can see where they were by marks on the chassis. Trouble is, with new bushes it's reluctant to go back there.

As long as the brackets are even and the position of the hub is identical within the rear arch for both sides, you’ve done what you can.

@Proghound yes I did indeed have this problem and finding somebody with the skills to do the job was difficult too. I found it is easy to set the axle so the car can be driven reasonably safely, however if you want it right all 4 wheels have to be aligned. Most garages think the rear of an A2 is fixed! You have to shop around for somebody who has done several VAGs.

I had the same problem when I rebuilt the S2. The subframes are adjustable and not many want to touch them.
I can use the string method to get it close, then up to my local garage who have the Hunter kit. Cheers.

Ok, fresh head this morning and plenty of tea and had another look.
Using a good torch, I can see clear marks where it was before. After 20 minutes levering with a length of wood and gentle tapping with a rubber mallet, I have it pretty much where is was before.
Then I noticed diesel drip from the filter housing which I did last week. So, tried to tighten it slightly and the bloody thing sheared off!
I have done a fix with a stainless bolt and diesel proof washer from the tractor parts box. These cars are good fun.
