Rear Axle for 1.4i - Any alternatives?

That axle from the fsi will fit but there is a lot more involved due to change from drum to disc breaks the entire hand break system from leaver through cables to the rear axle is different
Personally I would keep with drum breakers

Thanks Paul, my brake drums are relatively new so hopefully i'll find a 1.4 axle to avoid the extra work

It will be easier to find a drum brake axle anyway as the disc break version was only fitted to the fsi and tdi90
We seem to be at the end of the breaking fsi phase due to the mot change a few years ago and the tdi 90 are sort after so much easier to find an axle from a 1.4 petrol or amf /bhc tdi

If a swap is feasible for you @A2Steve then that would be very helpful, if you have any suitable condition? Thanks

I’ve got a TDI90 in at the moment and an FSI after that so both have a disc brake setup. Depends if you want to go down that route. I’m in Aberdare, so a swap over would be possible.

Having swapped the rear axle on a 1.4 petrol to a disc axle from an FSi, I wouldn’t bother. It’s a lot of work as you need new brake lines, new hand brake cables and hand brake mechanism, simply too much work for little (no) gain.
The only reason for the change was to look more modern with disc brakes.

Don’t bother.

Thanks Steve, hopefully I'll find a 1.4i axle over the next few day's, otherwise I may be giving you message if that's OK?

There was a rumor that later rear axles were 'universal' and would accept either drum or disc brakes
Anyone know if that's true

Cheers Spike

Ian not doubting that as you have first hand experience of swapping. I always thought that Audi introduced a new beam when the FSI was launched. This beam was then used on both rear drum and rear disc set ups. Whether there were also some body modifications for the later beam I do not know which could prevent a later beam being fitted to an earlier body and vice versa.

Thanks for clearing that up.

That may be so, but on the one we did the disc axle came from an early 2003 FSi and the drum axle removed from a mid 2003 1.4i. Only the FSi axle had the holes for the brake caliper. Whether the drum assembly can actually be used with the FSi axle, I am not sure. Just saying that both beams are different.

I agree with @spike that the beams are the same and only the brake hardware is swapped for drums or discs. Can not find my list of PR codes but here is the parts page....

PR options for rear brakes are -
PR 1KD discs
PR 1KB drums
PR 1KR 1.2 tdi drums

So it looks like the later rear beams are universal and will take either disc or drum brakes
