Rear discs and pads

A2 just failed MOT on worn rear discs and pads - is this a job that needs specialist tools or could I tackle with my limited toolbox? Are there any tips/points that can be offered, or should I book into local mechanic. Approx what would it cost? DS

Not a tricky job, but I got my local garage to do the work for me.

Discs and pads were £30 (look for Mintex brake box on Ebay - they're full sets of 2 discs and 4 pads) and labour was £20, so for £50 it wasn't worth me doing the work.

If you do want to do it yourself, ideally, you'll need a caliper wind-back tool which rotates the piston as it pushes it in to avoid damaging the seals.

Apart from this, jacks, axel stands and a tool kit stocked with the usual culprits (spanners, sockets etc) are all that are needed.

Cheers,

Mike

I'll contact my local mechanic and see what he quotes - if he's any where near to the prices you mention I'll be booking the car in...

Justed picked the car up with its new rear brake pads and discs - materials £63, labour £76, total bill £140. Not bad, given I now have the weekend free!
Thanks for you feedback.
