rear-ended : how to remove bumper

Following a low speed rear-ending (by a car in reverse, no less), the rear bumper of my A2 has - how to describe this? - 'popped' out of its mounting lugs on one side, with the result that the bumper now protrudes beyond the wing surface, rather than being flush with it & slots in the upper surface of the bumper (which I suppose engage with some lugs on the lower edge of the wing??) are visible.

Could someone help with a description of how to take the bumper off? Since the overall distortion of the bumper is minor I'm hoping taking it off to re-engage the lug:slots will sort the problem.

Certainly hope so, since the culprit legged it!

Thanks

Matt

Hi Matt.

Sorry to hear that someone drove into you.

People have no decency anymore.

I would just try to push it back into place at first to see if it works.

Removing the bumper is a real pain.

But if they have broken the clips there is not a lot you can do about that.

I have that problem on both sides:mad:

Good Luck

David

since I have to do this on Friday (goldfish in the boot...), I'll explain the process:
- remove both rear wheels
- loosen the screws on the rear side of the wheelarch liners on both sides
- the aluminium trim is pushed into place IIRC
- the remaining screws are underneath the trim and you will need to undo all the other screws you can find in the undertray cover.
- the bumper is secured on each side with a small "nose" of around 2.5cm in length and 1cm in width. This may well have broken for you... take a look and see before making the effort with the bumper!

I'll check with the strip, as said I will be doing this myself on Friday.

... not sure about this IIRC, meaning of?
The securing 'nose' to the bumper is not broken ... it's sitting outside the line of the wing ... so THATS some good news. Thanks (and good luck with that goldfish)

This points to somewhere I have no access no ... nor (sadly) the linguistic skills necessary to gain that access; is there any chance of that jpeg being mirrored locally?

The link you just have to become a member to view pics etc.. very easy and no very little to no German and i was able to do it

you could also try using this

just copy and paste parts of the page or the hole page and translate

Its ok i've saved it, so here's the pic in the link

Ok you need to remove black trim number 11, which reveals 6 screws number 12, two screws from behind the wheel arch liner number 3 (2 screws each side) then finaly screw 13 and 14 on the underside

But if its only come off one side you may only need to free the arch screws number 3 which should allow you to re-align that side, when you do push it back into place it does need a very firm hit just make sure your lined up you will see the tags and the holes in the bumper which they lock in to

When removing the rear bumper it would be a good idea to seal the vents. A common fault on A2s is for the vent seals to fail and let water into the lower boot.

Photo of a sealed vent here:

As Kleynie said
I just used Dow Corning 781 in black. Apply the mastic then spray with a water/fairy liquid solution and smooth with your finger dipped in fairy liquid.
