Andy
It was bought by my mum and dad in 2004. In January it is going to become my first car. I just noticed the seat thing the other day when we were re-charging the battery. It isn't currently MOT'd as it has an engine issue so we are waiting till I have passed the test to fix it and get it road legal. Hope this explains a lot

It certainly did for me, I had that exact problem seat locked in the up position and handle wouldn’t pull up to release.
Did the kneel bounce trick and it released.
In my case as with most when the seats lock it was caused by the seat base not being located correctly and by bouncing on the base this caused the base to engage correctly and as soon as that happened the release handle worked correctly and the seat folded as if like magic.

This worked for me this afternoon! Thanks

Hi Andy, I completely forgot I had this conversation open as I haven't had a chance to look at the car as I've been doing exams. I have taken some photos so could you please help me to see if we can get the seat to release

Thanks
Elliot

Any help from anyone would be helpful as well

To give yourself more room, remove the other rear seat. With that out of the way again try the kneeling and bouncing as suggested earlier as that does indeed solve most "stuck" seats. If that fails get someone heavier than you to try. If still stuck and the upper release handle is not jammed, sit in the gap where the other seat was and push the other seat back away from you towards the outside of the car while someone else pulls the release, then try pulling it towards you and then forward and back. if still stuck try a combination of someone bouncing on the seat base and you pusing the seat back at the same time. If still nothing the mechanism to release the seat back may be disconnected or broken.

Hi Elliot,

I too had forgotten about your seat, it was some time ago. Quite often a fault is fixed and nothing is posted to tell of the successful resolution.

Thank you for the pictures. Not conclusive but the seat base with the floor does look a little raised at the outside end (nearest wheel arch). If this is the case then the seat back will be leaning towards the centre and the root cause of your problem.

Audifan's advice is spot on but I will add the seat back has to pushed hard at the top sideways to try and correct the inwards lean. To recap, remove passenger side seat, get mates help, heaviest bounces on seat and rattles seat back top backwards and forwards, second person pushes top of seat back side sideways to correct lean, third person pulls up seat back release handle.

Post how you get on.

Unfortunately we both live too far from you to assist. I would have thought some of our London members could help you though.
I'm in Staines/Heathrow if that's near? My son, the A2 owner, is only 17 and had his when he was 16 and a half, we went through a similar learning curve as you. Good luck.

Hi Guys,

Just been out to the car and spent around half an hour with some mates trying to bounce the seat back into its mount. Sadly no luck, its as stuck as ever and I fear that if we pull too much more at the release handle then it will simply split. Having been out there, it definitely is raised on the outside end.

The only other idea I can think of is that if i can unbolt the bracket from the body of the car then I should be able to fold the seat and lift it out. After that I should be able to reseat the seat correctly.

Any ideas how I can do this or another way that I will be able to release the seat

Thanks
Elliot

Had a similar issue yesterday, seat up at outside corner and backrest wouldn't release. Bouncing and pulling lower release handle didn't work, but hitting the side of the backrest in the middle of the car a!lowed us to work the backrest release up and fold the seat down. Then kneel on top and pull release handle up and ithe raised corner slots into place to tumble and remove the seat as normal. Good luck :)

Thats confused me just a bit, is there anyway you could rephrase or add a picture to show me where you mean to hit it?

Sorry no pics. I was assuming you'd removed the other rear seat. If you haven't, do so. Then you can push or strike the stuck backrest on the end in the middle of the car that the other seat was butted up to. This should allow you to pull up the release handle on the other top corner of the backrest, and fold the backrest down. However the seat base still won't be seated properly, and you won't yet be able to release it to remove the seat from the car. To get it to engage, kneel on top of the folded down backrest and pull upwards on the handle in the base. You'll hear or feel the click when the raised corner seats itself. Then release and remove the seat as normal.

OK I'll give it a go tommorrow. Tried a similar method earlier. How will I know when I have bashed it enough for the release handle to work

You have tried with the other rear seat completely out of the car. Also when you take it out you can see the balls and spring mechanism that locks the seat base into the floor, this is probably what has stuck or if the base is not flat engaged into the hole in the floor. This must be fully engaged into the floor to release the seat base, but please do not try to lift from the lower handle until the seat back has been released.
