Rear seat removal

Hi All
I have recently had need to maximise on space to carry a larger load and had forgotten that the rear seats come right out making the carry space enormous..
I just wanted to post this message to remind some folk who like me may have forgotten about this -----and what a fantastic feature it is to have !.....I wonder if there's many other cars that have this feature ?

On another topic....are many owners running their 1.4 AUA on "super" unleaded or the higher octane unleaded petrol ? (I assume its ok to do so ?)....with all the stories coming out about the effects on consumption and problems etc with the E10 Im considering switching to the Super unleaded permanently.

Best wishes

Bill

I run my daily driver A2 around in 'van mode' the whole time now, due to reguarly doing a supermarket waste food collection run for a local redistribution charity. Its rear seats, load cover and boot false floor sit inside my other 'show-queen' A2 in the garage. This works well for me - on the very infrequent occasions that I need to carry more than one passenger, there's always another car (non-A2). I will have to remember to put the rear seats back in for the MOT this week though, or I'm sure there will be at least an advisory about it since the belts are still there, just with nothing to fasten into.

You should be absolutely fine to run your 1.4i on V-power/BP Ultimate/Tesco Momentum etc. You probably won't notice any improvement in performance or economy but with regular use you can expect to have a nice clean injection system, which certainly won't hurt its emissions come MOT time.

Yep, Audrey picked up just such an advisory on her latest certificate last week!

Both my A2s have been vans for a few months now as we move house! Although I did put Akoya’s interior back in for the long drive on Sunday, but that was more to remove it from my in-law’s garage than a desire to do so.

Mine is a 5-seat model and I've only taken the rear bench out once, but it was quite difficult. Firstly, the seat itself didn't seem to want to unlatch, and required me to get in the boot and bend down to give it a hefty yank, which did my back no good at all. Then, having got it to unlatch, it's rather heavy...

But I agree, it's a very useful feature to have available.

I removed rear bench only once or twice, pretty unpleasant. Since my floorplan is for separate seats whitch were supplied with car, last removal 2 years ago was permanent :D.
Separate seats are pretty easy to deal with, last time i removed one of them was last friday to transport 2,5m long and 40cm wide wood panel....Front seat backrest was lowered to rear floor.

So just to be clear are you saying you have a four seater A2 that you have a rear bench seat in?

It had a bench seat forced to fit* (when i got it). My writing was probably little unclear.
Replaced with separate original ones pretty fast. Bench was missing at least one floor connection for that feat...
Bench is still used for after sauna cooling/sitting purposes...

Skoda Yeti was more or less the same idea as the 4-seat A2, albeit with 3 removable fully-foldable rear seats the size of a narrow suitcase and also featuring adjustable legroom (ie as with the driver / passenger seats you could slide each forwards and backwards on its own chassis over a range of about 8 inches if I remember to increase boot space as needed. With seats removed it was a real box - even more so than the A2 if that is possible! Very clever piece of kit and like the A2, a cult-ish car that has really developed its reputation further with time after they didn't replace it with something like-for-like at the end of the production run.

If you want to go a bit further back in time - my 2CVs all had removable one-piece rear benches, although fractionally (!) lighter than the one in the A2 5 seater. Also an easily removable passenger seat as well meaning you had a near-flat floored tall box with an open roof for things like fridges and packing crates that didn't go through the narrower doors or boot lid - vivid memories of making use of this capability moving flats / houses on a few occasions as a student 25 years ago!

Thanks for your thoughts.
The rear seats are back in again now .The thing that was noticeable was just how much noisier the car was with the seats out.!

So it seems I shall become a permanent user of Super unleaded. There's thoughts that the E10 petrol is the governments way of getting rid of petrol cars.........who knows...

Pretty sure our Renault 4s had removable seats and that sure does create a large ‘box’ one of them only had ‘hammock’ seats. Naturally my wife called it ‘Watson’ (elementary my dear)

"Battersea" runs on a strict diet of Tesco 99 and is noticeably happier as a result. Recently treated to a new OE coilpack, Denso plugs, and new plugleads. There was an occasion when I ran for a short while on 95 (not E10) due to petrol station having no super. The difference was discernable.

Super rules OK.

For rear seat removal i never take off headrests like in video, it is not needed.
But front seats can't be too far back for that, need to slide them forward sometimes.
I'd drive without rear seats pretty often, but noise kills me, so they stay in whenever possible.

Thanks for your input
When you say "discernable" is that .....performance...economy...or anything else in particular ?
Cheers

Just smoother, noticeably more power and therefore "noticeable". Reckon economy a tad better. Go on, you know you should.

Simon
