Rear wheel alignment

The rear n/s tyre is scrubbing on the inside. The dealer says they cannot identify what is causing the problem and could only eradicate it by a process of elimination. (Had a 4 wheel alignment measure done). First replace stub axle £300 if that does not do it, main axle a further £500 and if that fails to sort it body gig, cost not known. Dealer says no idea what has happened, no sign of any inpact damage, HPI clear etc. Anyone had similar problems or any idea's? Not a huge problem, does not appear to affect handling etc and tyre last about 20,000.

What wheels and tyres are you using? I have had minor scrubbing on the offside rear since new (yes, even with the factory fit wheels of 7J x 17 and 205/40 tyres).

If it is just the arch liner that is rubbing, have they considered that it has moved or come adrift. I also presume they've checked the rubber bush and axel carrier for wear, as a small amount of play here can multiply significantly by the time you transfer it to the wheel rim.

All these are cheaper options to replace too, oh and by the way, the stub axel is £58, not £300. Their quote for the main axel is nearer the mark though, as it costs £412.

Mike

The only rear axel movement that I know of happened to TDIman and at first, that movement wasn't picked up on either.

Maybe a PM to him will reveal something else to look out for.

Good advice Skipton.

If you get to a point where it will get costly, work out how much a tyre costs and how quick it wears. If you can rotate the tyre to increase longevity, it may be cost effective to just change tyres when needed. Lots of people run with tracking slightly out (at the front), and if you have a sport model you wear tyres anyway on the inside all the time!!

If it costs £400 to sort, how many tyres would you buy for the N/S rear?

Point noted EMM. The reason for the post was to see if anyone had had a similar problem and found a cheap solution. The tyre was replaced at the MOT last year because it was scrubbed on the inside edge. Did not give it a thought, assumed must have been on the front at some time. 18,000 miles later at the service last week, same problem, this time down to the belt so presumably 15,000 would be a safe limit. If I was to use budget tyres on the back at about £70 each and swop them, it would take a long time to get any serious repair money back.

Totally understand i would post on here first as well. You never know if it turns out to be a simple job for a few quid or not. But as you say, once you start talking serious money you begin to think about how many tyres you would need to get through and how long you might keep the car...

Hi, well the movement on mine was post accident repair when I had the whole rear beam replaced, if you can get the car up on ramps, have a look where the rear arms join the beam there are some fixing bolts holding the beam to chassis, on my A2 these had moved on one side making the offside wheel closer to the inner wheel arch and this caused rubbing, however as you said a 4 wheel alignment has been done this will have been piced up then as the Audi system references various points on the cars chassis and suspension, they also go to the extent of putting water barrels in the car for a simulated load, thorough or what!

cherrs Mike

i am going to take mine to nottingham wheel alignment centre this weekend, after having a new track rod end + various other bits replaced.
will report back on how much it costs if i remember!
