Hi all what is the recommend number plate tape to use as I’m getting new number plates and I don’t want to use screws as they always go rotten :)

The tape will be going on aluminium pressed plates

Thanks :)

Hi Lewis,

Have you considered the A2OC number plate holders available in the merchandise section of the site?

On my golf I've just used the strips you can buy from places like Halfords etc, 7 strips on each plate. Before fitting I cleaned all the old sticky stuff off though and gave the area a good clean and added a little polish for protection before sticking the new plates on ??

I will be buying the A2OC plate holders very soon :)

Thanks

Number plate holders can be screwed to the vehicle using self tapping stainless steel screws such as these: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/POZI-FLA...EEL-FLANGED-TAPPERS-No-6-8-10-12/111846279119
I used #10 size, 3/4" with mine. The holders have an absolute array of preset holes and it's easy enough to identify a pair that will match the existing holes in the tailgate. For the front, just drill a new set of holes in the bumper.
You can add sticky strips as extra support but I'm not sure I'd rely on them as the only means of securing your plates particularly over the longer term.
Number plate holders are so cheap that it's a false economy to fit plates without.

The absolute ultimate tape to use is 3M VHB. I know this from experience. I've used it many times and it's tenacious! Number plates have never come loose and as you've said, the plate is smooth and easy to clean. Make sure that the cardboard roll that it's wound around is branded 3M .....

Absolutely agree, 3M VHB 5952F is the way to go. It will hold plates on its own once it's had time to cure, even against tension when the plate is being curved into position. I think I might have recommended it to you before.

Look what I found everyone :)

Brand new too ;)

I must admit it’s handy when your father owns a packaging company you can just go in the warehouse and pick up what you need :)??

Now I can see that you've got pressed plates, I'd say it's all the more important to get number plate holders in case you need to swap them over for plastic plates at MOT time - which depends on your tester.

Curious, why? I'm under the impression pressed plates meet MoT regs.

Because not everyone agrees on that. I have pressed plates myself, and I'll find out come MOT time whether or not my local garage is happy to pass them.

I also wholeheartedly recommend this over anything else I've used. The Halfords type ones are too thick or too weak! Buy the other stuff!
