Recommendations on a 7 Seater under 5K

My only issue so far is this person is asking for a bank transfer before dispatch of car. However, i could pay by cash or card if i was in his office but you are not allowed to make card payments over the phone. Any suggestions on this?

This is the problem at the moment, you can make a refundable deposit and go see the car and if you change your mind get the money back, that is within the rules

he has just found a way of doing a card payment through izettle...not familiar with it but looks a better than a bank transfer so hopefully someone here can shed any light on this but i will have a look myself and see :)

Just phoned my CC company and i must say, what a head ache that was. Apparently i need to do all the checks before making a purchase with a car in general to cover myself ie. HPI check, check the DVLA website for buying a used car, MOT checks, customer reviews, where the person/business is based, registered business company house, I thought she was going to finish saying stool or blood sample. And this was just to see if i would be covered should things go bad. Even if i done all the checks it might still not go in my favour because of the risks involved due to all the scams involved online.

I realise doing the basic checks is necessary but this seems a little extreme. The problem i have now is trying to tell this seller what i need to do before going ahead, which if i were in his shoes would probably sell to someone else avoiding all the hassle however, if your a decent seller then you would do everything you could to keep a customer happy! Until i pay a deposit the car remains open for first come first served.

He has given me the V5C number and mot history check out fine. Do i assume everything is legit with this purchase? Should i ask for more personal details like how his business is registered? where he stays? is there anything else i've missed out?

Thanks in advance...my head is busting!

Hi Cammy.

A basic car check is only a couple of quid. The premium checks are £10 or so. Well worth it for the reassurance.

I have family who bought a caravan and had it confiscated by police later as it turned out to be stolen property and they had no recourse for compensation.

Autotrader have a short ‘buy safely’ checklist. If the buyer pings any alerts just walk away.

I once was interested in an A3 (I know, pre A2 days) and it all looked good until they asked for the payment to be made via a cash handler. Alarm bells rang and I went back asked another couple of questions and for a particular photo to be taken (close up of stereo) and suddenly I was cut off and no further replies. The same car advert appeared a couple of days later with a different ‘seller’.

I use HPIcheck for any car that I'm buying - I even used a checker when buying my A2 (that cost sub £800). I normally bought a multicheck to get them for around £10 each, they dont expire AFAIK. Use teh cash back sites too of course. Sometimes offers on their checks come up too.

It looks like this deal might fall through as i've spoken to someone else who is willing to travel to me and take a deposit for his troubles should i not purchase the vehicle.

Hypothetically speaking, what if i paid for the HPI check and everything ticked all boxes and i done the transaction only to find out that the HPI check was not correct, are they liable? I've never used an HPI check before and forgive the naivety here but the adverts that are shown on Autotrader have an HPI list at the side, is this an example on what you get or the real checklist?

There should be an example report on the website, you get the info that some car sales sites like autotrader show, a bit more detail and in fairness a load of waffle too (standard vehicle dimensions, economy etc) The HPI check guarantee doesn't apply to Northern Ireland so never looked too much into that. For a private sale, I did the usual DVLA MOT history check, asked the owner some questions and did a HPI check using the reg and vin/v5c info to make sure there were no surprises lurking there. For some vehicles in the past I was also able to confirm service history with a dealer garage too. If you are buying from a dealer they will usually be able to give you a copy of their HPI or similar check.

Hi Guys,

Just to report back... after many phone calls & texts to the latter guy with the Black Alhambra , that deal fell through as i got no response from him at all in the last 2 days, so he's either sold it to someone else and doesn't want to speak to me or maybe something else personal has happened. My heart was set on the Black one but in the end we settled for the Grey one i posted earlier in thread :)

After i got no response from the Black Alhambra, i went back to check and see if the Grey one was still for sale, which it was, and to my delight he had updated the pictures after a valet. When i texted him to say what a difference a valet made to the car, we began talking again late last night and to cut a long story short the car was delivered to me today at 7.20am :) The poor guy drove from Kent all the way to my house early morning without any sleep and made the journey up to sunny old Scotland :)

The deposit was a lot less than the initial £1760 he originally asked for and he knew i was genuinely interested in the car having spoke late last night having commented on the revised photos he posted on Autotrader, so he agreed to take £600 deposit with the remainder paid on delivery, which i thought was acceptable. All in, the car robbed me of £5600 but time will tell if it's money well spent. As for a first time owner of an MPV it looks good...great actually. How i missed the days of driving my old Automatic Jap Import Toyota Hilux Surf, when all of a sudden the memories came flooding back on how good driving an automatic really is :)

I would like to thank all for the time and patience with me harping on about this and that. And as a new owner of a Seat Alhambra i don't think i will get the same support i do when i find the correct forum to join like i do in here, i hope i'm wrong in saying that but this is testament of how good this forum really is and i've joined a few in my time and nothing compares.

All we need is a 7 seater Audi A2 ;)

Great news Cammy. Let's see some pics of the new beastie safely at home in Airdrie. And your kind words about the forum are spot on the money. Its a lovely little community and I'm proud we've been part of it as long as we have buddy ?????

Now that i have a bus parked in the driveway and have space for all these cars i need a turning cycle for reversing if the Mrs is to make a safe manoeuvre and drive out onto main road.

I now need to make a serious decision on which A2's to sell. Do i sell my silver one along with the silver FSI or sell the wife's blue one!
