Recommendations on a 7 Seater under 5K

We had a VW Sharan in 1997. No problems at all as I recall - other than monstrous depreciation. I know that it was still running in 2007 as I saw it - it was a taxi in Worthing and was then on 249,000 miles, but it looks as if it was scrapped later that year.

My current 2013 model has 292k on the clock

If my 2016 43k mile Touran gets anywhere close to that then I’ll be happy! Has it had any major work beyond servicing / suspension etc?

All the suspension has been refreshed and parts for this are crazy cheap!

It’s had injectors and fuel pressure sensors. The DPF has been removed by a previous owner

There is currently a alhambra se lux selling on fleabay for £3500 it looks like the guy would accept £4200 but my problem is location. I stay just outside Glasgow and he stays in Houslow. So the travel arrangements would be difficult should i decide to put a bid in and buy. I'm not sure of buying something i haven't seen in the flesh and the only option i think is someone else delivering the car and inspecting once received....is this a chance worth taking or leave it be?

Edwrai...you could sell me yours if you want or do you want a trade in with my A2??? ;) What spec is yours just out of curiosity Ed?

Did i read somewhere on here that there is a transport pick up and drop off service?

The only sure fire way is to have an AA inspection (or like) done before paying for the car and having it transported by a courier. shiply.com is the way to go with getting quotes.

Mine is a taxi spec with the 114hp engine, honestly having done my research on these, don’t go with the electric door :)

Why not the electric door option Ed? Is it a worry if electrics fail on them or is it something else? How good is the parking assist option on cars in general? I only ask this because of my wife's parking lol

Because they fail and when they do they are expensive! The park assist is very good even in snow and rain. Comes up on the radio also.

Hi Guys,

I've seen a VW Sharan on Autotrader for £5589 from a trade dealer in Blackburn. Any opinions on this advert for sale?

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-de...nesearchad=Nearly New&onesearchad=Used&page=1

Also, is it a good thing that a car in general has only had 1 owner from new? Any particular advice on haggling with a dealer on current climate with covid etc...

Is it better to wait it out until travel restrictions ease?

Thanks in advance :)

I don’t know about the auto boxes on these but, I’m sure at the mile it will need some work with suspension at the very least

Hi Cammy. That car looks in very good order for the age and mileage. Mot history says it did 100k miles in 4 years so it's maybe been a taxi although the interior condition defies that. The MOT history looks okay and ref previous comments a lot of suspension work looks to have been done. There's no tell tale evidence of child seat marks on the rear front row which can often accompany tatty and damaged trim. Ask the dealer to send you a detailed walk around video and photos of the service book. Dealers will often deliver for a cost. Ask the question. And for me 1 owner is a good thing. Find out if its private or a business.
You can see a few dinks and chips on the body but it's 8 year old and 165k miles so that's honest and expected. Digital images of that resolution it's hard to tell. Front should be reassuringly stone chipped if not it's had paint. Scottish registered car Cammy on an SM plate. Edinburgh or Stirling I think.
Mileage is totally no issue in my view however I think the DSG has a dual mass flywheel (my cousins passat did) and he traded it as it was on the road out and we know its a fairly expensive fix. Good luck Cammy

Thanks for the helpful info Murdo and others regarding my query.

It just makes it difficult to buy a car and not see it in the flesh due to covid. I've not bought a car from a garage in over 15 years due to the A2 bug and have more faith buying from fellow members than i do a garage to be honest.

Can anyone recommend a forum to maybe join and possibly see any cars for sale?

Cheers

The scene for these cars in non existent, the seat cupra focus has one or 2 bits for the Alhambra but for the sharan you may get the odd bit on volks forums but very little really.

Update...

Spoke to the guy at garage who said he can't budge on price but would be able to deliver to Glasgow (Easterhouse) for £100 which is reasonable considering the situation we are all in. I forgot to ask him if it was personal or business use, i'm assuming it was probably used as an ex-pco/taxi like Murdo mentioned. I've sent an email to ask him as telephone is ringing out, will try again later.

Out of curiosity Murdo what is the worst case scenario for a Dual Mass Flywheel replacement should it have these issues?

Cheers

If you go for it, ask about the warranty - wanrrantywise platinum plus is worth having, they paid our £180 claim on our Touran no questions asked.

I would not buy the car at that mileage with only a bare-bones 3 month warranty.

It would be sensible to expect DSG problems and budget for them. Ive got the same era Caddy Kombi with what I should think has the same system. It actually has similar mileage. So far Ive replaced the DualMass flywheel, gear selector fork bushes and rebuilt the mechatronics unit. It still isn't quite right, I think the differential bearings are on the way out. I don't think having these issues with them is uncommon either.

Don't know the cost of a DMF on these Cammy. It's circa a grand for an A2. Advice above is sound. Get video walk round so you can really see what you are buying. And seriously give consideration to a warranty

For the manuals the parts are cheaper and the DMF is also cheaper in labour and parts than an a2.

However the DPF is really what I would worry about.

True. My dad's 1.6TDI Skoda DPF went at 9 years and 31k miles. Low mileage as bad as high. Or worse as the regeneration doesn't take place. I was told it was when not if the DPF goes. Think our quote to replace on the Roomster was 1100
That said I found a source to refurb them for a third of that. No idea of the success of this as we part ex the car instead.

Just to go against the flow of this thread completely we have had a Galaxy and now have an S-Max as our family transport.
We opted for a manual turbo petrol engine due to the nature of our regular journeys.
We have racked up just over 100K miles in 7 years with no costs other than tyres and discs/pads.
We have three kids between 7 and 11 and it copes admirably with everything we throw at it and miraculously still looks remarkably good considering it’s age and ‘use’!!
