i bought some oil the other day castrol edge 0w-30 is it safe to put in my audi a2 tdi
i have always bought the castrol edge 05-30

Regardless of viscosity, oil for our TDi engines should meet one of the following specs - VW 505-01, VW 506-01 or VW 507-00

505-01 is for annual/ 10000 mile service intervals only but the latter two can be used for long life services

And didn't mentioned there, but these long life service intervals (30-50k km) are valid if you're motorway person. If you do a lot of city driving: stop and go, low speed, cold engine, etc. 15k km interval is enough with any proper oil. But if you'd like to use a better oil, that wouldn't harm your car ;) I personally wouldn't risk my car and try to go for a 30k km for a single oil change unless circumstances mentioned.

i only do city driving and short journeys.i have only done 3000 miles last 12 months and used castrol edge 05w-30
so do i need to do a oil change its been 12 months but only done 3000 miles the castrol edge 0w-30 is vw 502 00/505 00

We don't do much mileage now either. In my view regular oil changes for low mileage /short run journeys are equally if not more important than that for a commuter car as we are running the motor at low temperatures on a regular basis. Take the 00/30 back where you got it and shop around for a deal on the 5w/30 castrol edge you've already mentioned.

i bought the 0w-30 because it was £15 for the 05w-30 was £38.00 in asda .thats why i am asking if it is safe to use

It does not meet the spec for Audi diesel engines with the PD injection system so there is a significant risk of damaging the highly stressed camshaft if you use it.

Its got 505 00 I thought that was OK for my engine

no, you need 505.00/505.01 or newer 504.00/507.00 these are specially for TDI PD. Just do not use this, because PD motors are sensitive for oil.

Hi,

Now I am confused (my usual state!)

Tinny just said that the oil he has is 505.00
Its got 505 00 I thought that was OK for my engine

And Saumart responded with

no, you need 505.00/505.01.......

Was that a typo?

But thanks for trying to help, SauMart, it would be good to put this one "to bed"

My response would be, don't use any oil that is not of the recomended type (as Spike has indicated)

Saving a few pounds now could cost thousands later.

Steve,

That was not a typo. I don't know actually why it's written so on the label. I think it's so that oil fits for those who need 505.00 but specifically is designed to fit TDI PD 505.01. I know that I should search for 505.01 written and I haven't seen only 505.01 on label. Bigger number means it cover previous versions, but there are exceptions like for R5 or V10 TDI engines, but that is not the case.

So minimum number for oil specification written on package must be 505.01.

And the list of 505.01 approved oils: http://www.my-gti.com/2528/volkswagen-oil-standard-502-00-505-00-505-01-approved-oils

Amen. :D
