Remap, insurance & servicing

Hi everyone, I have a couple of questions that I hope you can help with.

I am interested in geting my 5 year old A2 remapped, but want to check about the insurance implications. Do I have to tell them that the car has modified, and if so how much extra does it typically add to the premium?

The car is now due for a service (as it has now done almost 37500 miles) and I am wondering whether it is wise to get Audi to do a 'baby' service, then take the car to be stealthed and ask them to do just the additional service items that actually need to be done. Is this a sensible approach? Or should I get all the Audi recommended things done without exception?

Thanks, Andy.

You must disclose 'all material facts' to the insurer and modifications is a specific question - it can include the fitting of non standard wheels etc. How they will ever know that a car has been mapped is unlikely since the is no noticeable 'add-ons' other than tweaking the ECU. I won't advise either way but if you tell them it will increase your premium and will depend on the insurance company as some may decline to insure you!

As for service - why go the Audi? Is this to keep the FSH? Personally the car is now 5+ years old and will never be sold by Audi main dealer so to me it is of little consequence who services it provided OEM parts are used etc. and don't see the point in paying £90 per hr labour. I doubt future buyers will be interested in an Audi FSH - although you could use Stoke/Stafford Audi that do some very good deals on service. Standard service is simple to DIY for oil/filter the rest is wear and tear - drop links, ARB, discs/pads etc as and when.

Diesel or petrol? If diesel you may want to think about a timing belt soon as the guide is 5 years or 70k (for 2004 models) whichever comes first. I need to get mine done!

Thanks Foghorn, yeah I wasnt sure because it is just a software change, rather than anything physically being changed.

My reason for going to Audi was to maintain to the Audi FSH, and my not really knowing what constitutes a service nowadays, so much is computer controlled and I am not sure if they do anything beyond changing the oil & filters as the ECU controls everything else that used to have to be done manually. I presume that Stealth are more than capable of changing any additional standard wear and tear items?

It is a diesel, and am tempted to wait another 12 months before changing the cambelt, which would be 6 years, but is half way between services so spread the costs a little.

My advice would be to spaeak to your insurance company or your broker and ask their advice before you have it done. That's what I did and my broker advised me to write in once the work was done and he sent me a letter confirming that there would be no change to my premium.

It's always best to be honest;)

A friend who runs a garage for performance cars that also does remaps says that a date stamp is left on the ECU when it is remapped, so an insurance company, should they, wish determine if and when it was remapped.

Different companies will vary the quote by different amounts, so they only way to know for sure is to call them up.
