I am due for a new set of tyres and I was just wondering if I am likely to get that much difference in ride comfort if I was to move from a 40 profile to a 45..

Its just the pot holes in this country are doing my head and my wheels in and it almost feels as if there is not enough space to absorb the crash of hitting a pot hole and my tyres being compressed and the damage being transfered to my allow rims.. it really does do my head in that our roads are so AWEFUL.. to me every road should be motorway perfect with no exceptions... no excuses for weather, road works etc, just PERFECT.. my road tax was paid with perfect money, so was my council tax..

I have changed to 205 45 17 mainly for rim protection but also for a softer ride, I have also a set of
A3 SE 16" rims with 205 50 16 on which are far more giving in their ride but find the car feels loose in the handling dept which I dont like, so have to say the 45's are a good compromise, if you want to try I'm near Manchester, not sure were you are.
I have bridgestone RE040's on and they are pretty good in all conditions, done about 6k now with minimal wear, about 6mm left on front, 7mm on the rear, cost me £88 each fitted and balanced.

Hi EF - am I right in thinking that you're running 215/40s at the moment?

If so, I doubt you'll get 215/45s in the arches, especially with your suspension setup. Best thing to do is find a good independant who will advise you and maybe even stick one on the car to see the results.

My 215/40 Goodyear Eagle F1s are superb compared to the standard Michelin Pilot Sports in 205/40. The ride comfort (although still harsh) is much improved and the grip (especially dry) is great - I can no longer wheelspin in third gear!

Cheers,

Mike

Yes I am running 215/40/17... The suspension is just about as good as I can hope for, but its those holes in the road.. Having driven my car from new with the Audi wheels 205/45/17 and their sports suspension,, I could never move back from where I am, and I may just accept that I have to give something up..

On a back to back, the car at present will, in the wet, out performs the car I had from new in the dry.. and to give that handling up now would make me too scared to drive another A2 [in the fashion that I currently do].. maybe I am just being greedy and you are probably right, 45's would mean a change in width and that would mean yet another 4 wheel alignment change and possible other suspension tweaks..

At under £50 per tyre for my current brand and the fact that I have had over 20K out of them and the thread wear indicator is still no where to be seen, I might just stick with the devil that I know

Have to agree with Skipton, just had Goodyear Eagles put on on Tuesday, Feels fine doesn't it!

What Size?

I noticed that every one is going in the direction of the 215/40/17 so what width of rim are you using 7.5?

Because my recent experence of a 205 on this size rim is it dont fit! too much wheel rim to kerb will the 215 resolve this?

I am using 7.5" x 17".

They seem like a natural fit, but sadly the kerb still keeps jumping at me.
