Restoring 'Soft touch' interior parts- any idea's anyone?

Ok, I'm going to go back to Audi UK to see if there's any chance of remade buttons and light switches. I'll update further as I get any news...

Well, as you were saying earlier, if you go in all guns blazing you'll get nowhere. Ask nicely and you'd be amazed how much you can get....

Soft touch spray update. My local dealer has it in stock, albeit in the wrong colour. It's a double ended can with one coating being sprayed onto another. At £18 I ordered one on the spot. Should be in next week apparently, so no 5-6 weeks as per customer services. I'll update further when it arrives....

good news, i can see a bit of a rush from a2oc members to buy this given how often the problem has been mentioned. it would also probably be handy if anyone has an 'old' door card to experiment with in order to get the best finish. I would imagine temperature, masking off, sprayed surface angle etc will all be relevant.

if you cant read the instruments I would say that is a safety issue surely?!
I will order some from my dealer tomorrow but how are you expected to spray over switches and still keep the red light shining through?

This is for the interior panels, not the switches.

Such as the handbrake tunnel area, door panels and glove box lid etc.

When you get it can you post the part no.?

I'm not sure either. If the coating that goes on the window switch surrounds is the same that's on the centre console then it's good news. No idea if it is until it turns up, but either way it's an aerosol so I don't believe it's designed to be brushed on...

I'll look forward to reading about your results, hopefully seeing some pictures? Our headlight switch surround is starting to look very rough, and I'd like to freshen that up, but I think it'd be a real hard job masking off the symbols effectively. I considered the replacement sticker for this, but it wouldn't cover all of the worn area, therefore it'd look naff.

Hi all, I've got it. No instructions though which is pretty poor to be honest. I've no idea how to apply it so I guess it's just the usual techniques used with rattle cans? I'll give it a go on a spare window switch surround first after Christmas, and update with results....

Just to chime in, the rubberised button coating has been a long standing issue that didn't affect the early A2 (2000-2001) as the buttons and dash finish was different.

VW cars are also affected. I had a Touareg with sat-nav and some buttons were peeling. I could not order individual buttons only a complete unit @£1500. Needless to say I didn't bother.

Having owned A2s for now over 12yrs I am very careful hence my 2003 car has perfect buttons given that I leave the setting on Auto @22DegC and never really have cause to change it as the climate control is so good. My wife's 2004 A2 on the other hand is a different story given that she has never grasped the concept of climate control mistakenly believing setting it to HI will giver her heat quicker on a cold engine - it wont!

I may try some of the stick on buttons if they are translucent for the backlight to show through

Gotta love this cold weather when the Webasto heater kicks in within two minutes of driving off every morning giving me warm air.

Hi,

This soft touch paint is not for the buttons, it is for the other areas of the interior where the coating has peeled off or worn away.

There are some stickers for the buttons that let the light through, there are others that look hideous AND don't let the light through.

Cheers

2003 and 2004 A2s don't have the Webasto. Instead they use an electric auxiliary heater.

Cheers,

Tom

The buttons are definitely soft-touch and are the most common area of wear. However, my understanding is that the product on offer from Audi is designed for soft-touch trim parts, like the centre tunnel, kick boards, etc, as Steve suggests.

Hi Pompeydave or any members that can help?
I know this is a very old thread but is there any chance of a part number for the spray you bought Im looking for the soul black and just rang my local Audi, Unfortunately they said they needed a part number, he sounded very surprised by my line of enquiries and said it was the first he had ever herd of it lol

Hi all, I havent got round to trying this stuff yet, another Lambretta rebuild has got in the way. I'll have a go at it in the next week or so and report back...
