Retrofitting pdc

Now that I have the car wired and coded for pdc, I will be looking at retrofitting the pdc sensors.
A bit of research tells me that the existing rear bumper has markings for drilling. But how do you fit/fix the pdc sensors to the bumper? Is there a cradle available? What adhesive/fittings do you use? What sensors do you fit. Photos of the inside of the bumper would be thank you 🙏

You need a cutter, size according to PDCs. I have the A2OC cutter for 17mm holes for the Cobra sensors. It was donated kindly by @Kleynie. see this thread https://www.a2oc.net/community/index.php?threads/latest-mod-rear-parking-sensors.35812/ Ready to pass it on when needed with the wish that the recipient will in due course also pass it on. My fitter said it was the best cutter he had used - gave very clean cut.

Personally I can't recommend the Cobra sensors. They sometimes don't switch on and bleep. Maybe the cabling needs checking. I soldered the earth to the earth strap in the rear lights.

Note that with Cobra sensors, and maybe others, it's important that they are all orientated the same way and in certain "clock" position. See instructions.

Evening Justin,

Hope all is well Sir. Not too far away in Coalville I have the 23mm hole punch that you’ll need for adding factory sensors:

I last used it for adding the factory sensors to Project OEM and will soon employed again for a set of Jaipur Red sensors. If you was to find yourself passing Coalville then I’d happily assist with adding them to complete your retrofit.

Kind regards,

Tom

The photos above (thanks @devans) appear to be of a legitimate original PDC-specific rear bumper. Is that correct?

I believe that Justin is asking about the process of converting a standard rear bumper into a PDC rear bumper, capable of holding the OEM sensors in a factory-standard fashion. Clearly, holes of a suitable size need to be cut in the standard bumper, but there still won't be anything there to hold the sensors in place. It is this detail that's being asked about.

Cheers,

Tom

Hi Tom,

I guessed some of these questions would have been answered in the link to the Project OEM thread I provided earlier. What I acknowledge though is that I personally didn’t mention suitable sensor holders for the inside of the bumpers covering.

When doing this on my previous commuter I chose to use factory sensor holders that I removed from an A6 C5 bumper that utilised the very same PDC sensors. I’m getting close to adding Rear PDC and RNS-E PU OPS display on the latest commuter but I unfortunately don’t have any factory sensor holders, as such have gone the aftermarket route to save time:

These sensor holders work perfectly with the correct era PDC sensors:

You’ll see that the sensor protrudes to allow the thickness of the rear bumper covering, the known unknown here though is understanding if the 3M adhesive pad is too thick for the sensors to sit flush on the outside. Trial and era here I suppose as I’d be more than happy to remove the adhesive pads and melt/adhere the holders in a more factory manner.

The process of using the 23mm hole punch I have available is to first drill the pilot hole in the bumpers covering, the correct place to drill said pilot holes is already indicated on the inside of every A2 rear bumper covering. Quite simple to do really which I’m sure you’ve done countless times in the past.

Justin @Justin M I hope this additional information assists you with proceedings and having this retrofit finally completed. I’m only a PM away should you wish to take me up on my offer to help.

Kind regards,

Tom

Hi Tom. That’s great information thank you! A really clear write up. I’ll investigate sensors and holders purchasing and then reach out to you. Fantastic!

Hi Justin,

If you’re still seeking a set of sensors then the part number to what I show above is:

4B0919275A

I have a set of 4 here which are factory painted Azue Blue LZ5H which I’ll be painting to Jaipur Red LZ3S. Please do let me know if your A2 is Azure Blue before I recolour something that might be of use to you as I’d happily swap sensors with you and paint what you obtain, hope that makes sense.

Time is a limiting factor here as I’ll be ready to paint a set of sensors at the end of the month.

Kind regards,

Tom
