Hi all, 13 years ago I sold my cherished A2 1.4 TDI SE due to a series of company cars. I’ve held onto being a member as you all are a brilliant like minded bunch and ultimately I wanted another A2.

I’ve now taken the plunge and bought a good condition low mileage (26k miles) 2004 1.6 FSI SE...... I know what you are all thinking, its an unreliable engine and there are numerous documented issues with this engine which I’ve read.

Spec and condition was the most important thing for me as I want to upgrade/retro fit the things i ordered on my original A2 and then some (timmus I’ve sent you a separate message if I’ve done it correctly). Thereafter I want to look at an engine swap, probably a VAG petrol turbo hence not worrying about the FSI engine (some research to be done but would welcome some ideas).

I’m in Horsforth, Leeds if there are any meetings nearby or indeed owners who are local I’d be happy to meet.

I look forward to reading members experiences and no doubt I’ll post a few of my own.

Really chuffed I have another A2 and hopefully I’ll keep it forever!

Welcome (back) aboard :)
That must be the car that was for sale in Cupar recently. Looked a lovely motor. I should think it's one of, if not the lowest mileage FSI out there. Almost a shame to break that originality in the car but if you do swap out the engine, I imagine someone on here would be only to happy to buy it from you. I hope you get years of enjoyment from it whatever path you go down.

Just imagine if that 5 cylinder turbo (400bhp) from a TTRS would fit in an A2. The chassis wouldn't handle the power but it would be fun / scary.

Being a late model FSI and low mileage I’m hoping Audi may have ironed out the initial problems with the FSI engine. If it proves to be reliable with normal maintenance costs I’ll keep it original. The engine swap would only be on the radar if the FSI engine turns out to be problematic, I like originality save for the interior upgrades which I’ll only do if they were offered as options from Audi or can be converted back. My priority is to spec it up and keep it pristine and only put a few thousand miles on a year it will then continue to be low mileage going forwards.

Having just bought it, it was clean and tidy but I’ve further cleaned the interior to my super high standard. This in my opinion is the best way to get to know a car. Once it stops raining, I’ll clean the outside and add a few pictures to A2OC.

If by Cupar you mean north of Edinburgh, it’s not that one, this one was in Durham.

Honestly the time and money required for an engine swap would keep your FSI original engine on the road for a very long time.

I love the thought of 400 bhp, I doubt the 2.5l would go in the engine bay, maybe mid-engine,

I couldn’t ever do that to an a2, I bought an SE deliberately so not sure the chassis could cope with much more than 140-150bhp.

Agreed.

I think conceptually if Audi still made an A2 it would potentially have the 1.0l 3-cyl 115 bhp/148 lbs ft engine found in the UP GTI and A1.

I think it would be in keeping with the concept and would weigh in at under 900kg (dry weight). I wonder if that DSG box would fit too???

Anything will fit and work it’s just the time and money required to do it. The more modern the engine the more of a project it will be.

I saw that One advertised was very surprised it wasn’t snapped up immediately ..you’ve certainly got a mint low milage car .well done .. it would be a real shame to change the engine on this one ..but everyone to their own ..and we all have our own ideas on what our a2 should be like ?

Hi, welcome back. As an owner of another low mileage FSI (18K), from my experience of owning ours for 14 years, the running costs are modest when you are not doing a lot of miles each year. As an example, our car, that we bought in 2005 with approximately 6K miles & has covered around 1K or less a year has had very few problems & has never actually broken down, Apart from routine maintenance & replacing tyres due to age, it has only needed a couple of temperature sensors, a Nox sensor, Lamba sensor, brake disks (due to corrosion) & one coil. The total cost for non wear & tear parts over 15 years has been under £250 (all new parts) as I always hunt around for best prices for new replacement parts. I managed to find a new NTK NOX sensor on ebay for £100 when Audi are charging more than double that for the same item. I know many others quote 'doom & gloom' & great expense when discussing FSI models, but in our case the A2 FSI has been a great low cost 2nd car that owes us nothing.

Wow, another very low mileage FSI, yours will probably be the lowest.

It’s good to hear that it’s only routine and age related maintenance which is what I’d expect Corroded rear discs will probably be the first on the list to replace as that’s the only thing that needs doing pre MOT.

As the rear discs get minimal use, I’m assuming this may happen quite frequently, have you replaced yours more than once in the 14 years, are there any tips for looking after them?

Other than this there are a few nominal items to look at which will be jobs for myself.

I look forward to many years ownership with it as my 2nd car so intend on looking after it.

Hi, I have only changed the front & rear disks once in 14 years & pads are originals. But after three or four years, before every MOT, I took off front & rear wheels & rub down disks with emery paper to remove any surface rust; from memory there have not been any negative comments on the car's MOTs about the disks.
