Returning to the fold.... maybe....?

Hi, had an A2 a few years ago (1.4 SE petrol).... relationship lasted less than a year and we parted ways after an electrical fire, though I had lots of trouble with leaking gearbox (cracked casing) and intermittent misfire that was never resolved. Looking at returning (as despite all the problems I loved it) but with a tdi, currently doing 20k miles a year and want to bring the fuel bill of my Volvo v70 down. Just reconnecting and thinking at the moment.... I would miss the space and effortlessness of the Volvo.....

the only thing i missed from the s60r i had was the lovely leather atacama chairs and the stereo!

Welcome back.

At this time in proceedings it is a buyers market, the value of these little gems is not recognised nor appreciated by the automotive world. You should be able to source a good example using the usual car sale sites for a very fair price.

I do, however, believe the price will hold and climb in due course; so as well as a workhorse, you could end up with a future classic on your hands too and one which appreciates in value.

Service history, cambelt changes and the like are important, with the TDI especially, mileage is less of a concern - condition and history being a better tell of the vehicle overall. If going for the rarer 90, other expenses include the variable vaned turbo and the dual mass flywheel. Otherwise the 75 is pretty bullet proof.

Good luck in your search - if you find something of interest, I’m sure the members will offer their counsel.

Cheers,

Darren

20k a year is a lot of miles to be piling on a 13+ year old car.

I know that is what they were designed and built for, but I suspect it will be a challenge to find one which has been correctly maintained throughout its history.

@sciroccorrado and @Pinkythelabrat: What age were your cars when you bought them?

Mine was four years old and had a full main dealer service history. I suggest that buying a 13 year old car is a different proposition

The last three cars I bought for myself had (in order) 130k, 187k and 180k on them when I bought them... The first of those (A5 had 214k when it got rammed and written off, but was still pulling like a train), the A2 (187k) now has 209k and the A6 (180k) is the baby at only 192k now, and also the newest of the three cars (2010).

You're quite right though, buying a 13 year old car is quite different to buying a 4 year old ;)

I’ve had mine 5 years and it was at about 130,000 at the time.

I’m afraid I can hardly claim to have been kind to him and the local garage seem to be incompetent butchers so he’s not been in very safe hands.

If my car is still going in as epic a fashion as he is then this is a testament to the resilience of the little fellas.

Ps. I have finally realised the garage were butchers so I just took my A2 to a well regarded garage who seem to actually like cars... (porkies and nasteratis mostly but also Audi)

Whilst no car is going to be totally maintenance free, I say it's beyond all debate that the TDI75 is the most reliable of all the A2s.

And if you do have a problem, parts are available from suppliers on here along with help and advice from all!

My fella is moving on to his second clutch - first lasted 212,000 miles. £600 all in including LUK parts and replacement of all the gubbins inside the housing just in case it’s worn.

That’d get you two tyres for a Q7!
