Reverse Gear Disappeared

You never came back to report if you could select all gear positions by turning the tower selector with the cables disconnected. Or if when the gearbox is in reverse the cables can be connected with the gearstick in the reverse position.

Hi Audifan
I was not able to find reverse gear with the cables disconnected
With the cables connected and reset as per the instructions the forward gears are all perfect and to be honest sweeter than they have ever been as 3rd and 4th used to be a bit notchy but are perfect now - just reverse that can't be found
When I try to find reverse gear it feels very tight and when I release the clutch the car moves forward so it seems like it is in 1st maybe
On that basis I was assuming that the cables are OK as all the other gears are fine so the problem must be closer to the gearbox - the oil was changed last year and done less than 2k miles and the little rainwater collector was replaced last year as it was missing
Very frustrating as the car is going great but I can't really use it
If it makes any difference it has done around 144k miles

Adjustment sounds good and as the gearstick end was full and free is now pointing towards the selector tower although certainly would carefully check the levers and pivots for tightness and wear or obvious blockage or damage.

Reverse inside the gearbox may be damaged.
