Reversing Light Stuck On

Hey guys,

This is my first post here so forgive me for any ignorance.
A slight problem with my '51 1.4 Tdi, the reverse light is jammed on. I'm looking for a quick fix solution as I'm off to university in the next few days and don't fancy night driving blinding other drivers behind me.

I've had a look through this forum and couldn't find any details, so thought I'd give posting a go.

Disabling the switch (I presume there's one somewhere) would be ideal for the time being, if it's quite an easy job.
Otherwise removing the reverse bulb would be the next option.
Not ideal solutions I know, but until I have time to take the car to a garage it's better than being pulled...

Any help/guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Jp

Hi JP, welcome to the A2oc
The reverse light switch is fairly easy to get to so as you thought, just remove the connector as a temporary fix.
Ref the attached pic, the switch and connector are just visible below the bright metal counterweight on the gear linkage turret.
For reference this pic is from my 2001 tdi

Cheers Spike

Hi Spike,

Thanks very much! I'll have a play around tomorrow and let you know how it goes ;)

Thanks, Jp

Spikes comment on the locking mechanism is correct.

Also, it's not unheard of for the switch to go wrong, but more often than not, the switch fails altogether, meaning that the light fails to come on at all.

Disconnecting the connector as shown may not extinguish the light - if it stays on, you're looking at a short somewhere else.

Cheers,

Mike

Hi all, reviving an old thread here. Noticed last night when reversing that there was no reversing light. So I just opened up the light cluster and see there are no reversing bulbs. So I put a bulb in both sides are they are permanently on which explains why they were removed. The above thread did not set out a solution and so has anybody else experienced and solved this? Thanks

Try re-fitting the bulbs then disconnecting the switch as detailed above, if the lights turn off then the switch is faulty, so just replace. If not then there could be a problem with the wiring.

Thank you! Have bought a replacement switch as it’s a cheap part and will try swapping it out.
