running out of fuel ?

does anyone know how much petrol is left aprox in the tank as soon as the warning for low fuel comes on ?

Well I have the 42Ltank and I filled mine just after the clackson of death went off. It took 37L so had 5L left.

I see you have a 2002 model so I assume you have the 32L version. So I would guess 3 of 4L. But the thing to do is fill the tank as soon as the claxon goes off and see what you can get in and subtract that from the tank size. You then have your answer.

Cheers

Be aware that there can be nearly a gallon difference between 'filling until it first clicks off', and 'filling & topping up slowly while pressing the vent button'. So this may account for some of the difference between the theoretical volume & the actual.

On my 32L tank I think the reserve is at least 5.5 litres. But it may vary from vehicle to vehicle depending on how the float has been adjusted.

What's the "vent button"?

In the neck of the fuel filler pipe on the right hand side is a little lever which releases fuel vapour pressure from the tank when the fuel filler cap is closed and sealed. This is an important safety feature for petrol-fuelled cars to prevent excessive fuel vapour build-up in the tank which could be dangerous.

It is possible to push this button during a fuel-up, releasing vapour and therefore allowing you to physically add more liquid fuel into the tank than you would otherwise. This is not to be recommended for petrol-fuelled cars though because of the above. However, with diesel cars, this is generally ok as diesel fuel does not vapourise nearly so readily.

This is what several diesel owners do in order to maximise the amount of fuel per fuel-up. With venting, you can squeeze as much as an extra 4 litres into the tank beyond the normal "click and stop" from the fuel pump. As many of us diesel drivers are a bit obsessive about getting as many miles to the tank as possible, this is a neat little trick to get a diesel car to break the 600 mile per tank barrier. I know I do it :)

I find it varies for me but my light usually 'bongs' as the range hits 45 miles on the DIS and I normally fill it pretty soon after and it takes about 39 litres. This is with filling to stop, then venting and filling to second stop.

Last weekend I drove it down to ~25 miles on the DIS and I've just checked my petrol receipt - 41.840 litres  so I had less than half a can of Coke in the tank! Still trying for 400 miles to a tank though....

Well its not so much of whats left but how you drive as yes you may have around 5Lts left in the tank whether its the 34 or the 42 but if your driving around town (ie stop start stop start) then you'll probably not get much out of the rest of your reserve but if you was already on the motorway and at a constant speed you could get a lot out of it.

I got around 60 miles out of the reserve and then bottled it and filled up about 5 miles from home ( i was on a motorway)

See pic of the filler neck valve

Cheers Phil

Noticed that the OP seems to have a petrol fuelled car - in which case any conversations around using the vent switch should be couched with a huge warning sign!
