Sat Nav atlast!

I must have talked about this atleast half a dozen times in the past but atlast I've found a solution...

Navman GPS 4400 (Bluetooth) + iPAQ H2210 (Bluetooth)
Haicom: MCX External Antenna
Brodit Pro Clip (specifically for A2) and Active Holder for iPAQ 22xx

All for £599.89

My main concern is the heat athermic reflecting windscreen (or whatever it's called!). As far as I understand, this will not allow GPS signals to pass through it, hence the need for the external antenna. The question is where this should be placed. Under normal circumstances it would be placed magnetically on the outer body of the car having been passed through a seal in the boot. However since the A2 body is a combination of plastic and aluminium, plus my roof is entirely made from glass, this is not possible.

So, the question is...is the rear screen of the A2 also got this heat reflecting athermic coating on it? If not, the antennae/GPS module be placed on the rear parcel shelf.

In case you were wondering, the IPAQ itself takes either compactflash or securedigital which means that it is possible to have many European countries at street level detail stored on one or two cards. The capacity can be used up as follows:

England (3 files totalling 73.6mb)
Scotland (14.2mb)
Wales (7mb)
Northern Ireland (1.4mb)
Republic of Ireland (2.5mb)
France (5 files totalling 124.7mb)
Germany (8 files totalling 189.4mb)
Italy (3 files totalling 71.8mb)
Belgium (21.8mb)
Netherlands (36mb)
Luxembourg (2.2mb)
Austria (48.4mb)
Switzerland (37.9mb)
Portugal (12.6mb)
Spain (3 files totalling 44.1mb)
Norway (Oslo only, 5.6mb)
Denmark (19.9mb)
Sweden (3 files totalling 85.8mb)

Any help on the antenna issue would be gratefully appreciated!

I got the Dell Axim X5 with tomtom2 £350! I put the the sat thing that beams signals up and down, on my dash and had no problems with the windscreen? put it right at the front as close to the glass as poss, on the Dell unit it tells you how many sat's you are getting and sometimes it upto 8! My A2 is a TDI SE 02 give it ago before you purchase anything more.

I had a Palm V sometime ago and bought the GPS sleeve for it, have installed it all in the car, I found it could not receive any signals because of the windscreen! Strange I know, but can only put it down to the coating...hence my question about the rear screen!

Unfortunately there is no try before you buy option on this package!

Stu,

My VDO Dayton system has it's anttena under the dashboard. Not a problem. Either the signal is going through the aluminium skin or through the glass. Perfect reception.

The original SatNav+ in my A2 also has its antenna sitting under the front edge of the windscreen, so reception should not be a problem...

Bye, Frido.

If you look at Dixons at the mo they have a sale with the Ipaq H1940 and all the tomtom kit, maps, bluetooth GPS for a current sale price of £499.

I nothing to do with dixons etc

I use an ipaq 3970 with the tom tom hardwired kit, have the GPS unit on the rear parcel shelf and it works fine, I also found it worked oK with the gps reciever in the glove box.

Stuart,

i am using a Ipaq 3870 with TOMTOM, the GPS is build away under the dash. I removed the glovebox compartment and pushed the GPS unit against the underside of the dash. The result is perfect, almost every time 7 gps signals or more. I made a bracket where the Brodit holder is mounted on.

Thanks Erik!
That's great, I'm doing a test tomorrow with a friend's IPAQ and if it works fine, then I'll go ahead and order it all.
By the way, where did you get your cradle from?

Try WWW.Handnav.co.uk for the holder & proclip Fellas name is Chetam, before you order might be worth scouting ebay and the like as there are some ipaq knocking about a seriously cheap money at the momment.

Stuart my sat nav also works absolutely fine through the windscreen... my DART tag also worked fine through it (they also state reservations about certain windscreens).

Glad you will be the lead car going to Germany!

I like all these brackets and would love for my iPAQ 3970 to be powered from the car... BUT I find the screen to low down there next to the radio... because the A2 has such a massive windscreen and dashboard the iPAQ on its supplied window suction mount sits soo far foward in the centre of my dash that it is perfectly in line of sight as you drive and you can look at it AND still keep an eye on the road. Hence Volvo and Peugeot 307 and Megane etc all having their sat nav screens there and as far forward as possible... there should be a pic of it mounted in my signature.

Johann, I agree with your reasoning on your mounting.
My initial thoughts are to fix a hardwired cradle to the left vent on the centre console (http://www.handnav.co.uk/html/more.php?pid=978-Hardwire) that way my passenger (usually the wife) will also be able to view the screen and use the iPAQ etc.

The only issue I am having is finding a suitable vent mount that does not involve sliding anything between the trim. For example, something like this: http://www.handnav.co.uk/html/more.php?pid=Uni-Attachment
Although I don't think that the two devices above are compatible.

Has anyone else got any product recommendations?
