Sat Nav - Help !

Hello A2 drivers !

I have just purchased an A2 1.6 FSI Sport and the only feature I'm really missing from my new driving experience is a Satellite Navigation system. Does anyone have any thoughts on which system to install ? I would prefer one that doesn't stick to the windscreen and perhaps I have room where the single CD player is - or is this too low to be easily seen ?

I am 8.5 months pregnant and so excited about my A2 - which I bought to replace the Mini Cooper S I have driven for the last 2 years. What a comfortable drive the Audi is - I hadn't realised until now how challenging the mini was - it left me feeling exhausted !!

Is the Audi Sat Nav system good ? Should I combine a system with an MP3 player etc ?

Any advice much appreciated - thanks, Jo with the big bump :)

This is reallly funy

We are just thinking of replacing our BMW 330 for a MINI Cooper :D :D

About your sat nav

As i do not think you are a tinkering person (being 8.5 months pregnant) i would go with the easy option :( (you do not want one on the windscreen) and that is to replace your single din symphony (i take it that is the one you have now) with a single din aftermark sat-nav/mp3 player

I just installed a (ok 4 months ago) an alpine sat-nav unit in his corsa - this is the one with the sliding screen, so that is big enough to look at. it has tv, mp3 and ipod, and bluetooth telephone connection, so all a person could whish for

If you are a tinkering person, go for the origianl Audi RNS-E sat-nav unit Just do a search for skipton01 and see what he has done

Very strange that you find the a2 a smooth ride, as most people think (including me) that the a2 is a bumpy ride, a lot of people are thinking of replacing the standard shock with some better - comfortable - aftermarket shock

anyway

Welcome to the forum and enjoy your new ride

Hi, and welcome to the A2OC,
Just a quick note, if you want a full RSN-E sat nav setup you will need a new dash complete, - £600! reason being the normal radio is a single DIN unit whereas the RSN-E is a double DIN, in most Audis you can just change the cage, but not it would appear in an A2.

Thanks !

Thanks very much for replying, it's much appreciated. I'll have a search for Skipton01 and see what advice I can pick up.

I guess the price isn't £600 all in ? - wouldn't the cost of the system be extra on top of the cost of replacing the dash - Audi quoted me something in the region of £1500 for the Sat Nav system...??

Compared to the caged tiger power of the Cooper S my Audi A2 is a dreamy cruise of a ride !!!! Not that it hasn't got the power there should you need it mind you. Enjoy your Mini experience, I'm about to relish the ability to get a pushchair in the boot and not have the weekly shopping on the back seat :D

Hi Jo
You'r right, the £600 is for the dash only. A second hand RNS-E sat nav unit plus wiring loom etc would be £450+ and if you need to pay for installation then add about 6 - 8 hours worth of labour (no pun intended).
We have an installation guide on the forum but this covers cars already fitted with the double din dash

Hello Bumpy and welcome to the forums (I won't welcome you to the club - that comes next month!!).

Anyway, the Audi RNS-E sat nav is pretty much all that you'd ever need, but it is expensive (like most things Audi I suppose).

I've done a retro-fit to my car, including the dash swap and it's not a job to be tackled lightly. The all-in cost will be about the £1500 quoted by Audi, so it depends on whether you think it's worth it.

On the plus side, you can then add further ro the RNS-E 'basic' system, incorporating a TV tuner, bluetooth phone system, full voice control etc. These do cost more again, but are worth it. The 'basic' RNS-E now covers the whole of Europe, from Ireland to Greece and gives you real-time traffic info as well as having an MP3 compatible cd/dvd drive, 2 sd card slots for more tunes and a 7 inch full-colour widescreen display that is very easy to read.

It is slightly less desireable to thieves too, as it is a double DIN unit that a lot of cars can't accomodate and the unlocking of the units without the code is nigh-on impossible, without recourse to the German mainframe computer.

If you ever come to a social, or are in the Manchester/Swindon area (Bens stomping ground, who also has RNS-E) then we'd be glad to show you it.

Cheers,

Mike
