btw those hose clamps were golden, not a dip of diesel was coming through the pipes. Maybe need to order another set as those big ones are needed for coolant hoses. IIRC cost 5€ in aliexpress.
Hmm could you share a link? I really need to tackle this job on Audrey - which although has the later type fuel filter arrangement I believe the same principle is just as important - as it’s now due.

remembered wrong they were 15€ but given how well they work its still good deal.

Washed the car after 4 winter months.
Checked oil level - all ok.
There seem to be random clunk from front axle when turning that needs to be investigated. Got a longer lever so can get more force to the front axle when car is on lift. Assuming it comes from front subframe or sway bar links.

swapped to Meyle HD sway bar links. Needed to angle grind last bolt as it didn't want to budge.
new links feel sturdy.

got also sway bar bushings (ID 16mm) but the original looked to be in ok shape so didn't bother yet.

no skipped the process in rust treatment as they should have been dipped in the substance for 24h - didn't bother removing the drums now.
applied 4 times with sponge and let it be there over night.

Finalization was with paint with 2 component primer. Not sure if that's the right paint in that application but seemed to harden really well.
Applied 3-4 rounds to each drum.
 
Hi,
The hours of work invrsted to preserve the parts has prolonged the components life span which should save money, as new parts won't be required plus it makes the car look good.
In my mind rust acts similarly to a parasite (🦠) growing over the steel parts. If you remove the oxygen the orgsnism perishes.

Are you planning to do the same process as the drums on the rear beam axle?

it looks actually rather good so no necessary plans. front control arms are not that pretty but maybe just get new arms ws trying to make rusty shiny again.

I finally replaced the OEM Audi control arms on the TDI this month.
Make sure you've got a ratchet strap or winch to remove and install them from the rear bush.

Yes they are quite difficult to remove and fit without some type of device to force the rear part out or into the bush.20250313_113025.jpg

Yes the spigot is difficult to pull out and push back Ito the rear bush. However the critical stage is being able to remove the long bolt out of the front bush without wrecking the threat in the aluminium console.
